9 RPGs That Aren’t On Nintendo Switch Yet (But Should Be)

Handheld consoles are always great for RPGs, and the Nintendo Switch’s hybrid design makes it an even more ideal choice for the genre. You can grind on the go or in a waiting room, then put it in docked mode for big movie moments and to enjoy the story in comfort.

There are still a handful of classic RPGs that have yet to take advantage of this setup. The Nintendo Switch has been around for over five years now, so there’s been plenty of time for developers to put these RPGs on Nintendo’s newest platform.

THE GAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY

9 person 5

The Persona franchise is so ideally suited for the Nintendo Switch that you almost have to remind yourself that it’s not really there. The way the story and combat is divided into days of a school year works exceptionally well for sessions between 40 minutes and an hour.

Imagine how enjoyable it would be for a student to play this on the way to and from school throughout the year, while also finishing the game and their school year in real life. Persona 5 is on all other current systems, including Xbox, so we shouldn’t rule out the possibility of a Switch port.

Unknown Enemy Xcom Combat Gameplay

It’s always funny when a sequel is ported to a console but the first game isn’t. XCOM: Enemy Unknown serves as a reboot of the classic turn-based strategy franchise, reigniting interest in both the series and the genre when it came out in 2012.

The sequel has more variety in combat possibilities and maps, but Enemy Unknown is still worth playing. It’s especially unfortunate that we don’t get Enemy Unknown on Switch, because the only other portable option is the now-defunct PlayStation Vita version, which malfunctions and crashes frequently.

7 final fantasy tactics

Final Fantasy Tactics is one of the most famous spin-offs of the historical JRPG franchise. It is also highly requested for a remake. If a complete reinvention isn’t in the cards, why not at least give us a Nintendo Switch port?

As of now, anyone who wants to take Final Fantasy Tactics on the go has to use the War of the Lions port for PSP, or the iOS and Android mobile versions. Turn-based strategy games like Triangle Strategy and Disgaea have comfortable homes on Switch, so it makes sense for Final Fantasy Tactics to come here as well.

6 chrono trigger

As Chrono Cross has come to the Nintendo Switch and other modern platforms, it’s strange that the first game in the franchise can’t be played on the platform, especially when it’s one of the most famous SNES games ever made.

There must be people who have played Chrono Cross who have never played Chrono Trigger, and there are many things that you will be able to appreciate in the prequel. It also holds up very well as an RPG.

5 wasteland 3

Wasteland 2 is on Nintendo Switch, and it’s a title that makes a lot of sense for the handheld. We’re counting down the days until Wasteland 3 gets there too. The time spent in the menus adjusting stats and gear is a perfect way to spend a commute, before diving into the intense battles at home.

It was originally released for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 4 in 2020. There are a few downsides, with glitches like freezing and crashing, but that’s nothing a bunch of patches can’t fix.

4 dragon quest 7

dragon quest vii ps1

Dragon Quest 7 is an absurdly long game. Realistically, it takes around a hundred hours to complete the main story alone. You can’t be blamed for not wanting to spend all this time on a couch.

However, why not put Dragon Quest 7 on the Nintendo Switch and let players choose where they want to play? It’s a game that may require too much patience for the modern gamer, but would certainly be more tolerable on Switch.

3 mother 3

After the first two games in this franchise were added to Switch Online, hopes were raised that an announcement for Mother 3 would soon follow. Unfortunately, no such announcement has occurred yet.

There is no official way to experience the third game in this series in the West. Would it be that hard to put this game on Switch? It’s been translated by enough fans that it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be too difficult to create an official English version.

two Tactics Ogre: Let’s Hold On Together

Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together is the spiritual predecessor of Final Fantasy Tactics. It has many familiar mechanics, and even a similar aesthetic. It also makes sense, then, that it’s at home on the Nintendo Switch.

Battles last between 15 and 30 minutes, which makes it perfect for a bus or train ride. Just be careful to hold on to your emotions as you play, because there are some really heartbreaking moments throughout the story.

1 xenogears

Monolith Soft has created some of the best modern RPGs for Nintendo. The Xenoblade Chronicles games consistently please fans and critics alike, and the developer even helped out with Breath of the Wild. Fans should also get to experience the early days of the ‘Xeno’ moniker.

While Monolith Soft did not exist in 1998, Xenogears was run by Tetsuya Takahashi, who went on to found Monolith Soft and is the creative mind behind the Xenoblade Chronicles series. Xenogears is more linear, but is familiar to modern games with its unique sci-fi aesthetic that mixes futuristic designs with fantasy sensibilities.
