Alone In The Dark Reboot reinvents the first survival horror game

The rumors were true: a new Alone in the Dark is coming, taking the series back to its 1992 roots, revisiting a game that helped birth the survival horror genre. THQ Nordic announced the reboot during its 2022 gaming showcase, providing an early look at the third-person psychological horror title.

THQ gave GameSpot an early look at Alone in the Dark, calling it a “reimagining” and love letter to the original. As such, it features many elements from the 1992 title, including its setting, Derceto Manor, and its two main playable characters: private eye Edward Carnby and Emily Hartwood. While you will choose which character to play at the beginning of the game, they are both an essential part of the story. However, like other survival horror classics like Resident Evil, Edward and Emily’s stories aren’t exactly the same, so to get the full picture of what’s going on in Alone in the Dark, you’ll need to play from perspective. of each character.

The Alone in the Dark trailer gives a glimpse of developer Pieces Interactive’s approach to the game, which is set in the gothic American South in the 1920s. Like the original, the game focuses on Derceto’s mansion Manor, but the place has been reconfigured as a mental hospital for wealthy patients. As in the original game, the characters came looking for information on Jeremy Hartwood, but instead of trying to uncover details about the mansion’s owner’s suicide, they try to find him after Jeremy sent Emily a strange letter. Derceto isn’t the only setting you’ll visit, there are additional locations that make up the game, including an alternate dimension world that you’ll visit through portals that appears to be teeming with monsters.

Combat is an important part of the game, and you’ll use firearms and melee weapons to combat horrific creatures, fighting from an over-the-shoulder perspective similar to some of the later Resident Evil titles, such as Resident Evil 4, 5, and 6, and games like Dead Space. According to the developers, many times you will grab what you have on hand to fight the creatures you face, although sometimes you will also have to flee to survive.

Story is also a major component of the new Alone in the Dark, with Amnesia: The Dark Descent and SOMA writer Mikael Hedberg writing the reimagined version of the game’s story. Hedberg said during THQ’s presentation to reporters that the story will be more active than the original; he expects cut-scenes and voiced dialogue, along with notes, letters and other items he’ll find as he explores Derceto Manor and the rest of the world.

According to THQ, while the game will see you fighting monsters and occasionally running from threats, it’s taking a different tack than other survival horror games. While most games tend to focus on the terrifying elements of horror, Alone in the Dark is trying to explore other aspects of the sentiment and the genre. The heavy, dense atmosphere that was part of the original is also something the developers are focusing on for this new game, for example, and while you’ll definitely be fighting horrible creatures, combat might not be the main focus of the game.

Alone in the Dark is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The game has been in the works since late 2019, THQ Nordic said, and is currently in an alpha state, but a release date has yet to be set. A trailer featuring Grace, a returning character from Alone in the Dark 2, will be playable at Gamescom later this month.

THQ Nordic also announced other new games, including a Burnout-like racing game called Wreckreation, a management sim about building houses for aliens called Space for Sale, and a 1990s-style real-time strategy game called Tempest Rising.
