‘And yes…?’ the director breaks down the show’s Emmy-nominated episode

Marvel Studios’ And yes…? The series was perhaps the most curious departure from the MCU that many have adapted to. Being his first animated series, the nine-episode anthology used the multiverse as the ultimate tool for creative freedom, crafting new stories by twisting the results of key moments in the MCU library.

One episode even managed to get an Emmy nomination, namely What if… Doctor Strange lost his heart instead of his hands?, the fourth episode of the series in which Dr. Stephen Strange, instead of losing control of his hands as he did in the original film, lost the love of his life, Christine Palmer, in that crux of the car accident. The answer? A devastated Strange turns to magic to prevent Palmer’s death, ultimately failing to target him and succumbing to the vicious corruption.

It was perhaps the darkest episode of the entire season, which was praised by many critics, and director Bryan Andrews, speaking to Deadline, commented on how the desire to go in that direction with Doctor Strange was ultimately what drove it all. the episode.

“We knew even before we had a complete story that we wanted to do something dark with Doctor Strange. We wanted to do something where he messes up and fails at the end. AC was able to find an idea that really worked based on some personal experiences he went through dealing with loss: him not being able to deal with that loss mixed with Doctor Strange’s built-in arrogance.”

He would go on to take special note of the episode’s raw ending, which also served to set up a sneak peek at what was to come in later episodes.

“There are a lot of other episodes that were really great, but this one overall had a very emotional core. It just made everything really strong and cohesive, but I think the strongest part is the ending. It screwed it up and it marks a pivotal point in the whole season where The Watcher is actually looking at the guy and the guy can see The Watcher and they have some light dialogue.”

the second season of And yes…? It will premiere in early 2023.
