Andor’s Genevieve O’Reilly explains how Mon Mothma is different this time

The character of Mon Mothma was first portrayed by Caroline Blakiston, making her debut as a figurehead for the Rebellion in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. However, the character has primarily been portrayed by Genevieve O’Reilly, who appeared in Episode III, Rogue One, and the animated series Rebels.

O’Reilly has become the face and voice of Mothma during the time period before the Battle of Yavin (BBY), but after the end and fall of the Galactic Republic. Disney+’s Andor series will explore his character more than ever. O’Reilly was excited to return to the role.

“It was wonderful to get the call from Tony Gilroy, our rather brilliant writer and creator of this, who was interested in doing more research on Mon Mothma, who was interested in investing time and history in her, not just as a political figure, but also as a woman,” O’Reilly told GameSpot. “That’s, you know, the phone call that every actor wants to have. So he was really excited. And he’s a deeply curious and charismatic character, Tony Gilroy, and he’s someone you lean on.”

O’Reilly has already explored Mothma in this period, as Star Wars: Rebels takes place around the same time. However, this occurs before her appearance in that, so the character is not yet the one we meet her there. So O’Reilly and Gilroy had the opportunity to explore new avenues. “I think what Tony was interested in was respecting the work he had done for himself. [in Episode III and Rebels] respect what’s there and yet be willing to dig deeper into the character, creating parameters within the Star Wars lore that already exists, and be interested in being creative with the time we have,” O’Reilly said. We do not know? What could it be? What could this mean? We know that she has been a senator since she was 16 years old. We know that she has been representing Chandrila. Since that moment, we know, but what does that look like? What is [like] that a woman has been a figurehead, a political figurehead for so many years? What are the customs in this regard? What are the constructions around that life?”

“We know that she, even within Revenge of the Sith, at the time, was about the very early conversations about advocating change within the Empire. What does it look like to be 16, or however many years old that is, after that, still trying to do it? What is it? What does it feel like for that woman to realize she can’t do that anymore? And if she has to get out of it, how dangerous is that? What does she have to risk? “What does he have to sacrifice? Who is this woman?”

Andor’s first season should see some significant changes for the character, in order to connect with the woman she becomes in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Mon Mothma returns to Andor and new episodes debut on Disney+ on Wednesdays.

In GameSpot’s review of Andor, Mat Elfring said, “There’s a lot of potential for the season in general, but it’s a bit difficult to figure out how this specific story will play out, even if we do finally know how it will end.” The opening episodes don’t grab the audience’s attention exceptionally well, but there’s a lot to enjoy here. The cast is solid and the sets are great. It’s a Star Wars show that fits into its own little pocket of the universe and doesn’t depend on the rest of what’s going on in the galaxy to enjoy it.”
