Assassin’s Creed Mirage
We take a look at everything that’s on the horizon for Assassin’s Creed, including the long-awaited open world title set in Japan. But it’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage that takes center stage, returning to the “city playground” style of the previous games and combining it with the new one. Even though it celebrates the series’ legacy, it still brings that stealth action forward, becoming something new.
The Callisto Protocol
Our preview section begins with The Callisto Protocol, a terrifying horror set in space that nonetheless appears to be a breath of fresh air, pushing the genre forward while other franchises are still playing cautiously with remakes. We also engaged with Steins;Gate’s successor, Anonymous;Code, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion, and chatted with the celebrated writer of the new Star Ocean.
sonic frontiers
Speaking of, well, speaking, we also sat down for a chat with Takashi Iizuka, the long-time lead of the Sonic The Hedgehog project. In addition to discussing the change in direction with Sonic Frontiers towards an open world-style “open zone” approach, he also talks about bringing Sonic into 3D for the first time. It’s a fascinating insight into how the blue blur has been reinvented over and over again.
god of war ragnarok
Unsurprisingly, God Of War Ragnarok leads Insider as we get a bigger look at the fights ahead for Kratos and son, as well as the realms they’ll be traveling through and how the combat has evolved.
We also delve into Yakuza’s rebranding as ‘Like A Dragon’ and ponder what the three recently announced games could mean for the future of the series. Plus, a developer interview with Infinity Ward about Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2’s bold new campaign, the first new third-person Resident Evil campaign in years, GTA leaks, and more.
Reviews
Three sports games (including the final FIFA), tons of JRPGs, and a surprisingly satisfying soullike in Steelrising – this month’s review section is packed. Plus, we’re introducing ‘Extended PLAY’, where we dive unrated into the latest updates and hotfixes: this month we dive into Destiny 2’s King’s Fall raid revamp, the PS4 release of Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis, and why Call Of Duty: Advanced Warfare still feels inventive.
retro station
We return to Ivalice to re-examine why Final Fantasy XII was such an odd duck and still feels so unique all these years. Plus, we look into the making of Hogs Of War, and hats off to the first Ratchet & Clank turning 20 (!). For PlayStation fans old and new, PLAY has something for everyone.
