news culture Astroboy: Tezuka’s work will be entitled to a Franco-Japanese reboot in CGI
Few projects test the patience of fans so much. Mentioned for the very first time in 2014, the animated series Astroboy Reboot seemed well and truly abandoned until we learned of its recovery by a French director.
Astroboy, the reboot of the reboot!
One of the most essential works of the “god of manga” Osamu Tezuka (100 million copies sold worldwide), Astro Boy has already marked several generations of fans, including through its first animated adaptation. 8 years ago, a reboot had been mentioned by Shibuya Productions in order to dust off the myth through an animation series with a rather particular design. Since then, no more news…
But when we thought we had to draw a definitive line on the project Astroboy Reboot, here we learn the recovery of it by the French Thomas Astruccreator and director of the hit TV series Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir.
A new Franco-Japanese anime
Officially relaunched as part of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the animated series Astroboy Reboot will be co-produced by Shibuya Productions and Method Animation, to whom we owe the TV series The little Prince. It should have 52 episodes of 26 minutes and will be produced entirely in 3D CGI for a broadcast scheduled for 2024. Director Thomas Astruc is not only known for his work on the series Miraculous. He also participated in the elaboration of the storyboards of Code Lyoko, WITCH, The Daltons (season 2), or totally spies.
I don’t have the words to express how much Osamu Tezuka influenced my life and my work. Astroboy is a cult series that anticipated the future like no other work. Given the strange world we live in today, we need Astroboy back more than ever! – Thomas Astruc (director of the Astroboy Reboot series)
Current issues
This new adaptation of the manga Astroboy will try to stand out by addressing current topics such as the impact of the internet and social networks or the damage caused to the environment by human beings.
This new series carries the values of the original character and several major social issues will be addressed: the technological upheavals initiated by the arrival of the Internet and social networks as well as their often harmful impact on Man, segregation in all its forms and the resulting relationships of domination, or even the destruction of the environment by human beings.
Tezuka’s robot will therefore strive to convey a more modern message than in the past.adapted to the problems of a new generation of fans.
It is a great responsibility to revisit the mythical character of Astroboy, I am particularly happy to have met at Method Animation an ambitious and passionate team who will allow us to take this series to the highest peaks – Cédric Biscay (President & CEO of Shibuya Productions)
