The long-awaited sequel to James Cameron’s Avatar is coming this December, but before then, the original movie returns to theaters for a special remastered re-release. The re-release opens in the US on September 23, but has already debuted in some international markets. People have reported that the movie includes a special look at new scenes from The Way of Water.

The remastered re-release of Avatar is out now in France and Korea, and people there have reported on social media that the movie ends with a look at the sequel. Interestingly, it also appears that Way of Water footage may not be the same in all markets and theaters, according to Deadline.

The fact that the Avatar relaunch contains a new look at The Way of Water isn’t much of a surprise, as it makes sense to convince audiences to come back in a few months to see the sequel.

One person who saw the footage said it was a scene that lasted nearly 10 minutes and showed more of Pandora’s underwater worlds. This looks like it could potentially be the same footage, or similar footage, to what was shown at D23.

2009’s Avatar is the highest-grossing film in history, with $2.847 billion in global box office receipts. The movie will grow even bigger with this new re-release, giving Avatar even more space ahead of the No. 2 movie of all time, Avengers: Endgame ($2.797 billion).

In other Avatar news, Cameron recently commented that watching Avatar at home doesn’t count as seeing the movie because it’s meant to be seen in theaters.

It’s been over a decade since Avatar was released, and Cameron recently opened up about how he’s not sure if The Way of Water will be successful in theaters. The film opens in theaters this December.
