With a broadcast scheduled for January 2023, the anime Kaina of the Great Snow Sea is the new major project of Tsutomu Nihei, the author of the manga BLAME! and Aposimz. Its brand new trailer promises to be full of promise!
The new project from the author of BLAME!
Result of a partnership between Crunchyroll, Fuji TV and Slow Curve, anime Kaina of the Great Snow Sea is the new project of mangaka Tsutomu Nihei (Aposimz, Knights of Sidonia, BLAME!). Produced by Polygon Pictures (ESTAB LIFE: Great Escape) and directed by Hiroaki Ando (Listeners, Ajin: Demi-human), the series will premiere on Crunchyroll in January 2023 outside of Asia. A manga adaptation by Itoe Takemoto (The Beast Player) has even already been launched in the Monthly Shônen Sirius since February.
Kaina: as grand as Nausicaa?
The story of Kaina of the Great Snow Sea focuses on the encounter between Kaina and Liliha, two young people from different worlds, on a fantastic journey to save their planet. With an atmosphere halfway between science fiction and splendid images that are quite reminiscent of the masterpiece of studio Ghibli, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Windthe new trailer for this anime (visible in auto-play) promises to be full of promise!

The series will take us on a journey a world covered in an endless ocean of snow, forcing populations to take refuge in the roots of gigantic trees or in the canopy that covers the planet’s atmosphere. The two protagonists come from precisely these two radically distinct environments, the surface and the canopy, and will have to overcome their differences to protect their world from an immense catastrophe.
Kaina of the Great Snow Sea will be available in January 2023 on Crunchyroll. Note that the first 4 episodes will be broadcast in world preview during the Crunchyroll Expo convention to be held on August 6 in California.
