Jason Blum divulged more information about the expected Exorcist resurrection, comparing the next installments with his Hallowe’en trilogy.
With his Blumhouse Productions, Blum reset the decade old Hallowe’en franchise as a series of three films, as of 2018 Hallowe’enmoving on to 2021 halloween killsand ending with 2022 end halloween. Not only did he adopt the template of the triumvirate to The Exorcistbut as he said Varietyintended to give it the familiarity and freshness of its Hallowe’en trilogy:
Hopefully we will do the same with The Exorcist what did we do with Hallowe’en – Do it in a fresh and review-worthy way. And it feels different enough that people are happy we did it.”
In 2020, it was announced that the iconic 1973 horror film would be rebooted. It was turned into a trilogy with Jason Blum producing and David Gordon Green, who directed the film. Hallowe’en trilogy, attached to the direct. Blum stated that Green was the first choice for The Exorcistas it is “very good at respecting intellectual property that already exists and putting a new spin on it”.
Last year, Blum elaborated on the Hallowe’en–Exorcist connection and Green being the glue:
“We arrived and reconfigured ourselves [Halloween]and people liked it, so hopefully we can do the same with The Exorcist. Everybody thinks we’re going to fall flat on our face, but I think we have the same filmmaker, the same writer, David Gordon Green and Danny McBride. [co-writer]. And I think we’re going to reinvent The Exorcist to make it feel fresh, new, different, but, you know, related to the first movie, but also really scary.”
The release of the first installment is scheduled for October 13, 2023.
