Bungie is reducing interaction with the community after the abuse

Developer addresses ‘real threats’ targeting employees

Microsoft partner Bungie has been proactively reducing its interaction with social media and public forums in the wake of ongoing harassment, abuse, and threats against the studio and its employees.

Speaking in a conversation in the Destiny Reddit community manager Dylan “dmg04” Gafner confirmed that the steady streams of abuse from community members, many of which went beyond “rude Twitter replies or vague comments” and into the scope of “real threats” directed at both individual employees and the company. as a whole—has led the studio to put up a new wall, so to speak, to impede the physical and mental well-being of its staff.

“I will be very clear in saying that I appreciate the studio to the extent that it has helped me personally after serious harassment of myself and my family,” Gafner continues. “I’m taking some time off in part because of this. Just because you can’t see it directly in a tweet or forum reply doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.”

“None of this is meant to be a punishment for people who can leave clear and respectful feedback for our developers, mind you. There are no instances at Bungie where people actively watch a conversation and plan to retaliate against our player base through reviews, updates, or communication strategies. […] I agree, it’s a shame we don’t get as much interaction here lately. The team is planning ways to communicate with all of you.”

The statement comes just weeks after Bungie filed a lawsuit against one Destiny player for repeatedly cheating in the game, before threatening studio employees and suggesting he might “burn down” Bungie’s offices after being repeatedly kicked out of the sci-fi shooter.

Bungie’s completely understandable decision is just the latest story in a seemingly endless litany of cases in which video game developers have received online abuse, harassment, and even death threats over everything from delayed patches to to the lack of a port or launch. date. As I mentioned during the recent God of War ugliness, this sad trend is almost entirely a product of the connectivity and anonymity of the modern internet, combined with a frightening lack of human decency in general.

Hopefully, in time, this disconcerting trend of threatening humans through video games, movies, music, and other media will fade into the dark. But pessimistically, it doesn’t seem likely to slow down anytime soon.
