While Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Steam Deck support won’t be coming at launch, players who find alternative ways to access the game from their devices won’t face bans for doing so, according to a senior developer at the studio leading the remaster. great news for gamers hoping to play Modern Warfare 2 on their devices in the hope that the remaster lives up to its legacy of being one of the best Call of Duty campaigns to date.
Marc-Alexandre Boulanger-Milot, a UX/UI designer at Beenox, suggested an issue with the game’s Ricochet anti-cheat system is causing the problem.
When asked if the game would be compatible with the Steam Deck, Boulanger-Milot replied: “No. The main problem with Steam Deck is [that it’s] running on Linux, and for the game to run on PC, it must have the kernel driver developed for PC for anti-cheat… Maybe eventually, it will be compatible.”
However, he also confirmed that while the Steam Deck will not be playable ‘out of the box’, players will not face bans for finding workarounds.
The issue appears to be related to SteamOS, Valve’s Linux-based operating system. As cheaters remain prevalent in many first-person shooters, anti-cheating measures become more complex in their efforts to ensure fair gameplay. However, this means that some popular FPS games do not support Steam Deck because SteamOS cannot sufficiently accommodate such in-game anti-cheat tools.
Steam currently lists Modern Warfare 2 as “unknown”, echoing Boulanger-Milot’s uncertainty as to whether Beenox will be able to develop the game in a way that is supported by the Steam Deck in the future, which would add it to the more of 6,000 of the device. verified playable games.
Otherwise, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 system requirements do not require state-of-the-art equipment, and other games with similar specifications are verified as compatible. Fortunately, this means that players can fix the issue by downloading Windows or using other Linux workarounds to allow the game to run and will not suffer any repercussions for doing so.
Another option could be for gamers to learn how to configure Nvidia GeForce Now in the Steam Deck to bypass anti-cheat measures built into the game software. However, while this is a possible solution, it doesn’t seem like a likely fix any time soon, as Nvidia GeForce Now doesn’t currently feature any Call of Duty series games on its cloud gaming platform.
The popular space raider shooter Destiny 2 also suffers from Steam Deck compatibility issues due to its anti-cheat software. However, Bungie has taken the opposite approach and has said that it will issue bans to players who try to force the game on their devices.
