Mafia game videos (opens in a new tab)An aptly named YouTube channel dedicated to mafia gaming shared a few minutes of footage from Scarface: Empire in a recent video, fleshing out some recently seen ideas and environments. unearthed (opens in a new tab) conceptual art.
The premise of the game, according to a former developer quoted in the video, was that the series’ protagonist, Tony Montana, moved his cocaine empire to Las Vegas as Miami’s anti-drug regulations tightened. Scarface: Empire saw Tony build his own casino in Las Vegas to fend off the local mob and provide a front for his new drug ring, weeding out mob bigwigs behind the scenes to grease the wheels.
We can see some of that concept in action in these short gameplay snippets. The footage is taken from an incomplete build, but even at this stage, it looks like a competent enough open-world game. The World is Yours was a PS2 and Xbox game, while Empire was planned for PS3 and Xbox 360, so naturally it looks a lot better even as a prototype.
The original Scarface game was well received for putting a spin on the 3D GTA formula, which was fairly new and heavily tweaked back in 2006, and the shooting, driving, and police chases shown here definitely have a similar vibe. Another section of the video focuses on the revival animations that would play when Tony was knocked down in combat. These are much more basic than the game, but provide an interesting look under the hood of the game, not to mention a few cousin NPC expressions from the late 2000s.
A prequel to the Mafia game seriess It is reported that it is in process.
