Last September, Nintendo announced that Chris Pratt would be voicing Mario in his next movie. Chris at the time mentioned how he had been “working hard” to perfect the character’s voice, but we have yet to hear what it sounds like.
Now, in a new exclusive with Variety, Pratt once again spoke about Mario’s voice, this time stating that he’s “really proud” of the voice and that it’s “unlike anything you’ve ever heard before in the world of Mario.” .
This is exactly what he had to say:
“I worked very closely with the directors and tried a few things and came up with something that I’m very proud of and can’t wait for people to see and hear… It’s animated voiceover narration. It is not a live action movie. I’m not going to wear a plumber’s suit running around. I’m providing a voice for an animated character, and it’s up to date and unlike anything you’ve ever heard before in the world of Mario.”
Just earlier this week, Illumination CEO and co-producer of the film, Chris Meledandri, stated that the voice was “phenomenal.” He also noted that the film was now “three-quarters finished.”
The Super Mario movie will hit theaters next year. Aside from Chris Pratt, the cast will include Charlie Day (Pacific Rim) as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit) as Princess Peach, Jack Black (School of Rock) as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key (toy story 4) as Toad and Seth Rogan (quick pineapple) like Donkey Kong.
