Cyberpunk 2077 returns to success, the Edgerunners anime is not unknown there
You have surely read it this week: the video game Cyberpunk 2077 sees its image restored by its television adaptation on Netflix. Cyberpunk: Edge Runners is a hit, which is measured by several indications. First of all, it’s the number of concurrent players on Steam which has been increasing since last week to such an extent that it recently surpassed that of The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. It’s going to be difficult to surpass the record of 1 million players on Valve’s platform, but it gives a certain idea of the new popularity of the title. To this can be added the million regular players in Night City mentioned by the head of quest design. The title, flop when it was released in 2020, has become a staple today.
The rebirth of a title probably due to the numerous updates from the developers of CD Projekt. Deployed last February, 1.5 is a special patch optimizing the game on next-generation consoles and follows the numerous corrections made by the studio.
More recently, it’s update 1.6 which adjusts things by bringing balances and corrections but also new content related to the animated adaptation Cyberpunk: Edge Runners. Available since September 13 on Netflix, the adaptation produced by the studio Trigger (Darling in the FranXX, kill la kill) is a hit. The anime serves as a great introduction to the world of Cyberpunk 2077 by introducing the key elements of Night City bit by bit and is considered by many fans to be “the best advertising you can do for the game“. Something that is verified by the figures mentioned above but also by those displayed by Netflix.
Arcane and Edgerunners: which is the most popular?
Indeed, the SVOD platform has a habit of revealing each week the ranking of the most popular series by hour watched. While some media wondered whether Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was the best animated series made by Netflix since Arcane, it is this classification that gives us some answers. Indeed, we see that Edgerunners has accumulated 14.8 million hours watched during the six days following its launch. Results which allow him to reach the eighth position in the ranking but which are not sufficient to dethrone Arcane, the series which settles in the universe of League of Legends.
Indeed, Arcane did much better when it launched in November 2021 since it was then 34.1 million hours that were watched by spectators. Nevertheless, it should be remembered that the episodes of the latter lasted 40 minutes instead of 20: if this reduces the considerable gap between the two series, Arcane and LoL still do better than Edgerunners and Cyberpunk 2077 for this first week. What to do next? In any case, it seems to have motivated CD Projekt Red to expand the franchise.
