Dead Cells Breaking Barriers’ new update lives up to its name

The latest Dead Cells update does things a little differently and makes the game accessible to a much wider audience. The update, called Breaking Barriers, is the first accessibility update to Dead Cells, which Motion Twin and Evil Empire first began testing in January 2022. The developers worked closely with the charity AbleGamers so that those who previously they couldn’t play the roguelike they could. enjoy it.

“We had feedback during beta testing that some people who don’t ‘need’ assist mode will use it anyway and the result is that they won’t play Dead Cells as a challenging roguelike,” said An Evil Empire spokesperson. “We have put various messages regarding this in the game, but in the end it is up to the player how they want to enjoy the game. However, we will not disable achievements for players who use these options. We’re not going to make it possible for people to play the game and then have their achievements taken away.”

The Breaking Barriers update comes in two parts. One is a set of changes to various parts of Dead Cells, including changes to the UI size and font size, customizable controls, and background color filters. All of these live in the new accessibility menu.

The second part is the assist mode, which includes a set of additional options, such as multiple lives. This feature allows players to tweak how brutal Dead Cells is by choosing 1, 3, 7, or infinite lives, but not just because the game can be challenging.

“This is aimed at players who have involuntary movement or activity, such as muscle spasms, to give themselves another chance if their career is ruined by something beyond their control,” said Evil Empire.

Assist mode also allows players to adjust trap damage and toggle an auto-hit feature to reduce the number of inputs required during combat.

There are a substantial number of other improvements to both features, which you can check out on the Breaking Barriers patch notes page. And there are more on the way. Motion Twin and Evil Empire previously promised a year of free Dead Cells updates in late 2021, reaffirming that even more biomes and other new content are planned for later in 2022.
