Jinsei Kataoka’s dystopian thriller manga, dead man wonderlandIt received a pretty gory anime adaptation back in 2011, gory which was only seen on a handful of shows back then. When the first season aired, it even reached a huge audience. Its cliffhanger ending left fans stunned, and now, over a decade later, it’s still the last we saw of the anime. But it is Deadman Wonderland: Season 2 a possibility, and if so, when should we expect it to return?
One of the main reasons we haven’t heard of a sequel is because the animation studio, manglobewent bankrupt in 2015. This left many of their amazing works like Gangsta, Deadman Wonderland and Ergo Proxy with almost no hope for the next season.
While the chances of Deadman Wonderland: Season 2 seeing the light of day seem bleak, the anime industry is a case of the impossible happening, occasionally. So here is a brief overview of when you can expect to see the anime again.
When does Deadman Wonderland: Season 2 come out?
Currently there no official announcement confirming that Deadman Wonderland: Season 2 is in production.
If we were to speculate, the release date for the second season would probably be a few years from now, if it happens at all. Another intriguing concept is that due to the demise of Studio Manglobe, Deadman Wonderland could be getting a reboot or remake.
An action-thriller manga reboot is presented as the likely outcome. Geno Studio, the production company behind Kokkoku and Golden Kamuy, appears to be the likely candidate to run the project, as most of its staff relocated from Manglobe.
What is Deadman Wonderland: Season 2 about? (spoiler alert)
Ganta Igarashi is a high school student who has no recollection of the tragic earthquake that devastated most of Japan. As he sits in his classroom contemplating life, a “Red Man” clad in a vibrant crimson suit and with blood splattered everywhere, looms outside Ganta’s class. Suddenly, the Red Man kills everyone and places a crystal on Ganta’s body.
Being framed by the law for murdering his classmates, Ganta is sent to the Deadman Wonderland prison. The first season showed the events that conspired afterward; how some inmates possess powers, the Red Man is linked to the prison, and other movements within Deadman Wonderland championing the cause of the breakout. The first season ended by revealing to viewers that Shiro, Ganta’s childhood friend, is the Red Man.
As for Deadman Wonderland: Season 2, the sequel will feature the counterfeit arc. In this part of the story, the outside world learns of the Deadmen’s existence, which later leads to trouble for Rinichiro Hagire, the creator of the private prison. The next Carnival Corpse matches also take place, leading to the untimely deaths of some characters. Ganta is treated like an outcast by his fellow Deadmen, and little by little everything seems to spiral out of control.
Studio Geno continues with Deadman Wonderland: Season 2 doesn’t look like such a hopeful situation, but many anime have received sequels even decades later, so there is still a glimmer of hope.
