Quick, name an iconic Disney ride that you really want to see as a blockbuster movie experience. If you said Big Thunder Mountain, you’re in luck. Disney has announced its intentions to continue making movies based on its most famous theme park rides, with Big Thunder Mountain slated to receive this lavish treatment with the MCU’s Hawkeye series directors Bert and Bertie at the helm.
Beyond the announcement of the film itself and its directors, we don’t know much more about this project. It seems likely that the movie will follow a similar template to previous examples such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Jungle Cruise, and the woeful 2003 The Haunted Mansion (which is getting a new movie in 2023).
In other words, an original story for Big Thunder Mountain will unfold around features of the attraction that generations of Disney fans have come to know and love. Expect something related to the ride’s enduring popularity like a wild adventure on a roller coaster shaped like a minecart. Other elements of the journey are likely to be incorporated into a story that is perhaps more like the recent Jungle Cruise.
Despite the lack of any plot details, let alone a release date, we do know that the movie will be written by Kieran and Michele Mulroney (the 2017 Power Rangers movie). As for the production, Big Thunder Mountain will be in charge of LuckyChap Entertainment and Scott Free. It’s also unknown when the movie will begin filming, and there are currently no casting announcements or rumors to consider.
