Creative Assembly is most famous as the developer of the Total War games, but they also created the excellent survival horror Alien: Isolation, and we’ve known for some time that the team responsible for that has been branching out and working on something else: a multiplayer sci-fi shooter. Today, finally, his project is revealed: it’s called Hyenas.
‘Another multiplayer shooter’ you can say, but Hyenas is a bit different. For one thing, teams of three compete not to be the last ones standing, but to steal flashy details from the world’s nastiest billionaires.
“Billionaires finally made it to Mars, leaving Earth and tax bills behind,” Creative Assembly explains. “The zero-gravity technology that powered your journey has ripped our planet apart, leaving us in a drifting slum called ‘Taint.’ All the rich care about is the weird merch, the pop culture loot from the lives we left behind, which they plunder from the rubble to furnish their Martian mansions. It’s time we steal it back.”
As part of a trio, you compete with NPC-hired thugs and other player-controlled teams of Hyenas for the flashy contents of Plunderships: gigantic floating shopping malls, which the ultra-rich use to display their ill-gotten artifacts from the former. planet Earth, including Pez dispensers, SEGA Mega Drives and Panini football sticker albums.
The maps are designed like giant sandboxes, complete with alarm systems, traps, and pockets of billionaire bodyguards for you to slaughter and exploit. The pacing is described as “blazingly fast”, and each Plundership has zero-gravity slots, meaning wall-running, vertical movement, and mid-air combat could all come into play. Once you’ve looted your wares, you must escape the Plundership before everyone else, similar to exfiltration Battle Royales like Escape from Tarkov.
“We believe the key to modern shooter success is understanding what players want to see and where they want to take their experience,” says David Nicholson, executive producer of Hyenas. To take on the biggest games in the industry, we need to hear what players think, early and early on. If you’re in, we want to take you for a ride.”
It all sounds pretty cutthroat, especially in today’s world where the exploits of Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg and others make you want to turn off the Internet and throw the TV out a closed window.
Hyenas is slated for release on PC in 2023. Creative Assembly also wants your feedback before then and has already opened submissions for the first closed alpha. You can go there now and write your name.
If that means getting a shot at Elon Musk, we’re definitely in.
