Ewan McGregor Reflects On Reuniting With Liam Neeson In ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’

Star Wars had been giving strong hints that Liam Neeson’s Qui-Gon Jinn would return since 2005 Revenge of the Sith. In the final moments of that movie, Yoda said that Qui-Gon had “returned from the underworld of the Force” and told Obi-Wan to start training to sense it.

Seventeen years later, that unfinished plot thread finally paid off in the closing moments of Obi Wan Kenobi. With Obi-Wan regaining his Jedi mojo after triumphing over Darth Vader and rededicating himself to protecting Luke, he headed back to the wastelands of Tatooine, only to see the ethereal form of his former master waiting for him. Qui-Gon’s first words? “It took you quite a long time.”

Now McGregor has given his perspective on the reunion with his former the phantom menace co-star after so long. During an appearance at the Boston Fan Expo (as reported by Comicbook.com) he said:

“Liam is a hero of mine. Liam has to be, I don’t know, ten years, maybe a little more, older than me. So when he was a kid and wanted to be an actor, he would always look at Liam Neeson’s work, and he was involved in beautiful work as a younger actor. And to get the chance to work with him and have this great relationship that we created together is fantastic, and to get the chance to work with him again on the show right at the end.”

Rumors of a second season of Obi Wan Kenobi. After all, when the show ends, there’s still a long time before A new hope. If that happens, it would be a no-brainer to introduce Force Ghost Qui-Gon in a more involved capacity. Even after so many Force Ghosts in Star Wars We don’t really know his full abilities, but even seeing him in an advisory role would be a fun addition to the cast.

But before that, a younger Qui-Gon will appear in the next tales of the jedi animated shorts. Neeson will voice the older version of the character, though we’ll look back on his younger years, where Micheál Richardson, Neeson’s son, will voice him. Right now we don’t know when tales of the jedi will land, but as far as we’re concerned, the more Qui-Gon has Star Wars the best.

Obi Wan Kenobi airs in its entirety on Disney Plus.
