james cameron Titanic turns 25 this year, and the love story between Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack and Kate Winslet’s Rose is still an amazing watch. The special effects have been beautifully held up, the production design remains second to none, and it’s been a huge hit every time it comes to streaming platforms.
All of which means it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that Titanic it returns to theaters once again in early 2023. The film was already re-released with a 3D conversion in 2012 and its 20th anniversary in 2017 saw another short showing in theaters. Perhaps the only slight problem here is that this re-release will be in the “high frame rate” format pioneered by Peter Jackson with The Hobbit. This will convert the movie to 48fps and has the potential to make some in the audience very queasy.
We understand the artistic reasons for going with 48fps, although there is always an acclimatization period, as the increased fluidity tends to make sets and costumes look cheap and movement look like a soap opera. But, as always, it’s never a good idea to bet against James Cameron, so let’s have faith that he knows what he’s doing.
Titanic returns to theaters on February 10, 2023.
