business news Fortnite: Epic Games reveals the impressive amount of fundraising for the victims of the war in Ukraine
The video game industry has a great capacity for mobilization, and it is not uncommon to see studios and publishers set up events or fundraisers to help victims of natural disasters, armed conflict, children or animals. Latest example: Epic Games, with its battle royale Fortnite.
On March 20, a few weeks after the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Epic Games launched Season 2 of its Chapter 3 as well as a big fundraiser in Fortnite. Every profit dollar is recovered and sent to various associations and other NGOs in order to help the victims of the conflict as well as their families.
An initiative that got off to a flying start
In three days, more than 50 million dollars had been recovered and, by March 28, the initiative had raised more than 70 million dollars. This money was redistributed in its entirety to DirectReflief, the United Nations Children’s Fund, the World Food Program, or the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the World Central Kitchen. To enable NGOs to act quickly and provide rapid and concrete assistance to victims, Epic Games made regular transfers based on recording transactionswithout waiting for the actual arrival of the money.
Over $140 million raised!
The initiative came to the ears of the Ukrainian Deputy Prime Ministerwho did not fail to thank Epic Games. Collection continued until April 3and we could easily envisage crossing the 100 million mark, even taking into account a natural slowdown in support purchases.
But the balance is fine beyond expectations and estimatessince the Fortnite Twitter account recently reported that, thanks to the players, 144 million dollars were collected! An astronomical total, raised in just two weeks, backed by Xboxwho decided to give up his share of the profits to make the pot gross.
