Looking for the best version of Chongyun in Genshin Impact? The lollipop-loving professional exorcist has been around for a while, but now he returns as part of an Arataki Itto replay banner as part of Genshin Impact 2.7.
If you’re still wondering if you should address the Chongyun’s best build, there are many reasons: it’s a good primary DPS for beginning players, a useful Cryo secondary DPS for advanced players, it’s great for setting up elemental reactions, and its ascension materials are relatively easy to obtain. On top of that, four-star Cryo characters are still pretty rare.
Before we continue, let’s take a look at his playstyle. His normal attacks are quite slow and his damage cannot be compared to a five star. So no matter how you build Chongyun, make sure you focus on his elemental and burst ability. The elemental ability evokes an AoE field that deals damage and infuses Claymore, Polearm, and Sword weapons with Cryo.
Chongyun’s Elemental Burst is a basic but fast cryo attack with a very low energy cost. Note that Chongyun’s passive ability, ‘steady breath’, grants a small support bonus: Sword, Claymore, and Polearm characters gain a normal 8% attack speed bonus. This leaves us with two options: build Chongyun as a secondary DPS, or as a secondary DPS and support hybrid. Let’s take a look at both.
Chongyun Sub DPS Construction
- Old house: Wolf’s Gravestone (five stars) or Luxurious Sealord (four stars)
- Artifacts: Gladiator’s Finale two-piece and Blizzard Strayer two-piece
The Chongyun sub DPS build works like this: you don’t use it for his normal attacks, but just to cast elemental abilities and bursts as often as possible. The purpose of the Burst is to trigger Elemental Reactions, and the Elemental Ability sets up the Cryo field for other allies to use. Chongyun has cryogenic abilities that scale with his attack power, so we’re looking for weapons and artifacts that increase those stats.
If you’re willing to give Chongyun a five-star Claymore, simply go for the one that gives you the highest attack power increase: Wolf’s Gravestone. If you don’t have a five-star Claymore but do have a four-star Luxurious Sealord (yes, the frozen tuna weapon), that would be a great substitute. It gives Chongyun a huge Attack boost and Elemental Blast bonus, meaning you don’t need to use any Normal or Charged Attacks to trigger Claymore’s passive.
Don’t you have any of those weapons? Then go for the Archaic Prototype. Grants a decent Attack boost and bonus damage on Normal and Charged Attack hits. This is less suitable for a sub DPS build, but the big advantage is that you can craft this weapon at a blacksmith station.
The best artifacts for a Chongyun DPS sub are the Gladiator’s Finale or Shimenawa’s Reminiscence two-piece (both grant 18% attack increase) combined with a Blizzard Strayer two-piece (15% cryogenic damage bonus). As for the sub-stats, you can simply go with attack percentage in the Sands of Eon slot and a cryogenic damage bonus in the Goblet of Eonothem slot. The final slot, Circlet of Logos, can be used for critical rate or critical damage. It is advisable to increase the critical rate by at least 60%.
Chongyun Hybrid DPS and Support Build
- Old house: Sacrificial Greatsword (four stars)
- Artifacts: Four Piece Noblesse Oblige
We can keep this one short, as it’s not that different from Chongyun’s best sub DPS build. If you want to sacrifice some of Chongyun’s own damage to strengthen his allies, you should equip the Noblesse Oblige artifact set. This grants Chongyun a 20% elemental burst damage increase, and grants his allies a 20% attack power increase.
In this version of Chongyun, it’s very important to make sure his energy is full when Burst’s cooldown ends. Consider using an energy recharge stat on the Sands of Eon artifact slot. You can also equip the Sacrificial Greatsword to ensure a high enough Energy Recharge and occasionally reset the Elemental Ability’s cooldown (meaning more cryo infusion and normal attack speed for your allies).
Chongyun’s best team
If you want to find the best Chongyun gear, you should think about Elemental Reactions. His frequent Cryo attacks and Cryo Infusion can be best combined with Pyro to activate Melt, or with Hydro to freeze your enemies. Five star Pyro Diluc or Hu Tao, or four star Bennett and Xiangling would be great. As for Hydro, five-star Mona is perfect, but four-star Xingqiu and Barbara are also good.
However, the best teammate for Chongyun is none other than his aunt: Shenhe. This disciple of the Adeptus is a five-star character, so you’ll need a bit of luck to get her. However, if you get her, she’ll grant you an incredible Cryo damage boost, turning your Chongyn into an absolute beast.
