Game News GTA 6: After Grand Theft Auto 5, what revolution for Rockstar’s cult game?
As rumors about it continue to pile up, the sixth installment of Grand Theft Auto is slowly taking shape – at least in the minds of fans. To date, no image or official information has come to confirm the theories about Rockstar’s next project. Regardless, we already have a good idea of what the title might look like. Here, then, without waiting – our ideal GTA 6.
We may hear about it almost every day, but Grand Theft Auto 6 remains a great and vast mystery for the time being. All we know from a reliable source is that the title is in development, Which is not that bad. Last February, the Rockstar studio (GTA, Red Dead Redemption) confirmed the obvious: “Development of the next Grand Theft Auto game is well underway”. A sentence released in all relaxation, at the foot of an article apparently banal, on the official site of the company. It is known, Rockstar does as it pleases. As for the announcement of Red Dead Redemption 2 on Twitter, in 2016: first, a logo on a red background, silhouettes, then the formalization, followed by a trailer two days later.
But unlike the adventures of Arthur Morgan, GTA 6 does not seem to want to draw its first images in stride. And it probably won’t be right away. Rockstar turns a deaf ear and several analysts believe the release of the new Grand Theft Auto for 2024 / 2025, even if the latter option seems unlikely. Conversely, 2023 would be too short a deadline. Above all, we must not forget that the company already has a lot of work to do. The online counterparts of GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 continue to be regularly supplied with content, while the PS5 / Xbox Series versions of the latest Grand Theft Auto have just arrived, with the added bonus of a new subscription formula, dubbed “GTA+”.
Card and online game
So while waiting for more concrete elements, how can Rockstar revolutionize or at least improve a GTA 5 at the top of its form and glory? We are still talking about the second best-selling game in history – 160 million units – and which has gone through not one, not two, but three console generations. A tremendous longevity that Rockstar owes in large part to Grand Theft Auto Online, the online dimension of the fifth installment. Thanks to a follow-up worthy of a real service game (a lot of new features, including increasingly scripted robberies) the firm has ensured income and advertising over the very long term. It’s obvious, this aspect will be at the heart of GTA 6, with certainly some improvements: less farm-based progression, servers that can accommodate more players, a roleplay dimension why not directly integrated into everything. And there are other avenues.
Several insiders, including the well-known Jason Schreier, claim that Grand Theft Auto 6 will feature a scalable map, capable of metamorphosing – or even growing – over the weeks and months. A piece of information that can mean two things: firstly from the “online” point of view, with a common game space that would change according to events on the basis of a season system (Fortnite style, Call of Duty Warzone). Or from a solo perspective, with a card that could represent the passing of time, such as completing a bridge to another area, or player actions, following up on a building destroyed hours before. A scalable card would also make it possible to avoid crunch phases, i.e. additional hours of work, starting from a modest base to gradually expand. RDR2 had been pinned on the topic.
I dunno I haven’t seen everything but it’s still early in development, it has an evolving/expanding map (which I also reported last year), etc

I haven’t seen the whole project (GTA 6 – editor’s note) but development is still in its infancy, and there is an evolving/expanding map – Jason Schreier, July 4, 2021, on Twitter
Speaking of destructible elements, Grand Theft Auto has never been an example in this area, limiting this aspect to damage taken by vehicles. There is a good chance that GTA 6 will make progress on the subject. A job offer published by Rockstar last October mentions “very large-scale destruction events like skyscrapers crashing into the ground”. Intriguing, right? In any case, it is with this kind of thing that society would again push back the frontiers of the possible, as it so often likes to do. “With each project we launch, we have the desire to always surpass ourselves and produce something that has never been done before” says the studio, on its official website.
Better destruction of the environment would bring new gameplay possibilities, as well as more spectacular main missions (not to mention the impact on multiplayer). But that’s not the only thing GTA 6 could do 6 to do better than its big brother: revert to a multi-city map for example, what has not happened since Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, in 2004. On the subject, rumors evoke a new version of Vice City, Chicago, places like Cuba or Florida. What give an unprecedented scale to the rise of the hero, and why not enhance the membership of a gang. Finally, we would not say no to efforts on the management of real estate and stock market investment.
More mature storyline
All in all, GTA 6 is undoubtedly about to redefine the field of possibilities in terms of realism in the open world, thus combining the qualities of Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. And who says realism perhaps says a scenario more rooted in reality, like the excellent GTA 4, where we follow the adventures of Niko Bellic, a war veteran of Serbian origin who will do everything to achieve his American dream. The fifth part is, for its part, more uninhibited, following the personal and marital adventures of Michael, Franklin and Trevor. Result: quests certainly varied and very entertaining, but ultimately perhaps a little too much.
In any case, still according to rumours, Grand Theft Auto 6 will again bet on several playable heroes, obviously a brother and sister. A first for the series, which has never before called on a female protagonist to play the main role. It would be a good idea to introduce new themes and bet on the emotional springs of a close-knit duo. Moreover, the choice of several playable characters undoubtedly embodied one of the great strengths of GTA 5. It remains only to cross your fingers.
