It’s been a surprisingly busy night for MCU fans. Not only did Marvel Studios storm Hall H to present new footage from upcoming movies like Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and not only did we get our first look at the roadmap to the end of Phase 4 and the plans for Phase 5 ( including the next two Avengers movies and the next Thunderbolts movie), we also added a handful of new villains to the mix.
James Gunn officially announced that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will pit the team against none other than the High Evolutionary, played by Peacemaker’s Chukwudi Iwuji, and to really drive the news home, Iwuji stormed Hall H, showing up in costume and completely in character to deliver a scathing monologue about how he can’t wait to turn us from loathsome human beings into something truly beautiful.
Iwuji’s over-the-top theatrics was really emphasized by his metallic purple suit, really the kind of bad boy you’d expect to see in a Guardians movie. Check out some shots of him on stage below.

In addition to Iwuji’s casting, Gunn also announced that Borat 2’s Maria Bakalova will be joining the cast as Cosmo the Space Dog (yes, seriously) and that the film will feature an expanded look at Rocket Raccoon’s origin story, which Gunn mocked as one of the saddest in the universe. In the images screened exclusively for convention attendees, a sad baby raccoon was definitely featured prominently, so, you know, get ready for that.
guardians of the galaxy vol. 3 hits theaters on May 5, 2023.
