Halo: Master Chief Collection could receive microtransactions

Microtransactions are an integral part of most games today and it’s likely that most people have come across and even participated in them. Clearly, their inclusion in Halo Infinite has been successful for 343 Industries, as the studio is considering adding them to Halo. : Master Chief Collection.

The reveal that the Halo classic game collection could be getting the microtransaction treatment comes directly from 343 (via Eurogamer). “We are internally exploring a potential new feature for the future in the form of purchasable Spartan Points,” 343 revealed in a recent blog post. Spartan Points will be introduced, “for players who are new to the MCC, or who may not have spent a lot of time specifically unlocking items during the Season Updates or are just finishers looking to nab the last remaining items they need.”

If you play the MCC collection and keep unlocking items the old fashioned way, no matter if you’re falling behind the others or not, don’t panic. While purchasable Spartan Points will likely be introduced in the future, they will not replace the regular Season Points that can be earned simply by completing challenges.

343 describes Spartan Points as an “optional and additive alternative for players who may find the wide range of content an intimidating amount of playtime and want to jump ahead of (or skip) the grind.” On the one hand, that makes a lot of sense. Not everyone has time to immerse themselves for hours in a single game to unlock some items. On the other hand, seeing someone with an item you’re working hard to unlock, knowing that maybe you just paid for it, can be a bit annoying for some.

Above all, it’s good to see that even though 343’s focus has largely shifted to Infinite, there is still work and effort being put into the MCC. Even if that work and effort has gone into figuring out how microtransactions can be implemented. As for Infinite, 343 continues to work towards the launch of their co-op campaign. A beta of the mode is set to take place next month, but images of a mod believed by some players to be a leaked game were found online this week.
