Warning: This article contains minor spoilers. house of the dragon episode 6. Come back now if you haven’t caught up on the Game of Thrones spin-off yet.
House of the Dragon has played it fast and loose over time thus far, but as the story jumped ten years in episode 6, it reintroduced Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower. To ensure the actors seemed closer to the characters’ ages, the second half of the first season will now see them played by Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke, respectively, and viewers seem to have mixed reactions to the recast.
“I really don’t understand why they’re reprising the characters from House of the Dragon. I know there’s a time jump, but Milly Alcock is 22 years old playing a 13-year-old when the show starts.” asked a confused fan on Twitter (opens in a new tab). “Why can’t she play a 28-year-old girl?”
“House of the Dragon recasting everyone is such a brain dead decision. Some aged makeup [and] CGI would have been nice. I’m not interested in these characters anymore.” wrote a harsher review (opens in a new tab). “Relaunching in the middle due to time jumps is just dumb”, wrote another (opens in a new tab). “The story doesn’t feel cohesive and now I’ve lost all interest. Goodbye House of The Dragons.
However, some were happy to admit that D’Arcy and Cooke slipped into the roles well, with one Twitter user tweeting: “The House of the Dragon recast wasn’t as bad as I thought. I still enjoyed this episode a lot. Thought that the replacements still did fantastic.”
“It’s easy to see the difference the best actors make in the new Game of Thrones House of the Dragon series. I immediately loved the show so much more after tonight’s episode.” argued another (opens in a new tab). Check out some more reactions below…
Yes, it was a huge time jump between the HOUSE OF THE DRAGON episodes, but it was great to see the two new actors continue the story of Rhaenyra and Alicent. The episode itself was also pretty solid, seeing that the downfall of the family was about to begin. #HouseOfTheDragon pic.twitter.com/CsTjMGPgxiSeptember 26, 2022

The latest installment of House of the Dragon, aptly titled ‘The Princess and the Queen’, explores in part the growing tensions between Alicent and Rhaenyra, following the birth of the latter’s third child. Realizing that her stepdaughter’s children are a threat to her when it comes to inheriting the Iron Throne, Alicent uses the fact that Rhaenyra’s children are all dark-haired as a means of showing that they are not her own. white-haired husband, Laenor, and that they should have no royal position. Unsurprisingly, Rhaenyra isn’t too pleased with her ex-friend’s accusations of adultery.
D’Arcy and Cooke aren’t the only new “kids” on the block, either. Laena Velaryon, who was previously played by Savannah Steyn and Nova Foueillis-Mose, is now being played by Nanna Blondell, while John Macmillan replaces Matthew Carver and Theo Nate as Laena’s brother and Rhaenyra’s husband, Laenor.
House of the Dragon will continue on Sunday, October 2 on HBO in the US and the following day on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK. To make sure you don’t miss an episode, stay up to date with our House of the Dragon release schedule.
