Sonic Origins is the latest collection of classic Sonic titles, collecting Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. The new release ditches the stock emulation of previous ports in favor of accurately rebuilding all games within the retro engine, along with a new coin system in its anniversary mode and other changes such as the addition of the drop board.
A Mission mode is one of the new features in Sonic Origins. This mode takes players through uniquely designed courses based on various zones from each of the Sonic games featured in the compilation.
How Sonic Origins Mission Mode Works
The missions are separated by levels, and each game has its own set of missions and progression. These can range from asking you to complete a level within a time limit to dodging enemies while reaching the finish line with no rings on your person. From the beginning, each game only offers three one-star missions. If you own the Digital Deluxe Edition, each game provides immediate access to some exclusive five-star missions labeled “extreme” difficulty.
You only need to complete one mission within each level to unlock the next difficulty level, with a ceiling of five levels indicated by the number of stars on the mission selection screen. This means that you can unlock all available missions just by completing a handful of prerequisites.
Each mission offers five tiers in total, with rank C being the lowest and rank S being the highest tier attainable. This is one of the many ways to accumulate coins to use in the Sonic Origins museum. The higher your rank, the more coins you will get as a reward. Higher level quests provide more coins at each rank, incentivizing players to keep trying.
