How to tame an ichthyosaur in Ark: Survival Evolved

The ichthyosaur in Ark: Survival Evolved is the prehistoric version of the dolphin. These often-too-friendly creatures can be found in nearly every ocean body of water in the game and are found traveling in small packs. While they’re certainly not the toughest or most robust creatures in the game, they’re the perfect early game for any Survivor who wants to get in the water and explore. Ichthyosaur may not hold up against other creatures, but it’s still a solid option. This guide will detail how to tame the Ichthyosaur in Ark: Survival Evolved.

What is the ichthyosaur for in Ark: Survival Evolved

Ichthyosaur doesn’t have the best HP or melee damage, not even close compared to other creatures in the ocean. However, they are fast, agile, and incredibly easy to tame. The Ichthyosaur is a non-aggressive creature, and will even follow a Survivor, making it very easy to tame.
The Ichthyosaur can swim faster than the Megalodon, and if you use loot boxes underwater, they are a great option for quick in and out missions.

The Ichthyosaurus can be found on all maps except Aberration, Exctiontion, and Scorched Earth. They are most often found in shallow ocean waters and travel in herds. As mentioned, they will follow the Survivor and may even end up crowding you to the point of suffocation, so be careful. You will need the following items to tame the Ichthyosaur:

  • 1x scuba tank
  • Simple croquette or raw lamb. A level 150 Ichthyosaur being domesticated in a 1x taming speed requires 5 simple croquettes. A blood elixir can be used to increase taming by 30% once.

The ichthyosaur is a meek passive, which means you won’t be able to tame him if he’s knocked unconscious. To tame them, place the taming food of your choice on the last slot from your quick access bar and approach them. You will receive the message to feed them. Keep repeating the process until they are completely tamed.
