Now that Ryan Reynolds has confirmed what many superhero movie fans thought was impossible: that Hugh Jackman will return to the role of Wolverine for the upcoming Deadpool 3 – Self-healing mutant devotees are understandably freaking out.
Not only did we get the return of Jackman as an update, but also a new logo for the movie, that of the Deadpool symbol with cut marks from Wolverine’s claws, and a firm release date scheduled for late summer 2024. This all came from a Video Announcement on Reynold’s YouTube channel.
Even Jackman shared the same video on his Twitter account with the deadpan caption, “Yeah sure,” further cementing the third part’s casting choice.
Unsurprisingly, Wolverine was a hot topic of conversation on social media shortly after news of Jackman’s return broke.
One fan couldn’t help but point out that this was all apparently foreshadowed in Deadpool 2in which Reynolds’ Wade Wilson goes back in time to murder his maligned portrayal of X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
“Eventually, you’re going to hang up your claws and it’s going to make a lot of people very sad. But one day your old Paul Wade will ask you to ride again. And when he does, say yes,” Deadpool tells Jackman’s Wolverine in the clip.
“He said he would and he did. Dreams do come true 😭😭😭😭,” one fan wrote.
For one fan, the announcement was just what he needed to shake off the growing Marvel Cinematic Universe fatigue.
“We used to pray for times like this OH MY GOD,” one obviously very happy fan wrote.
While a commenter called 2017 Logan the “perfect farewell”, and we can’t disagree with that assessment, however, it is “great to see Hugh again”.
Another Twitter user proposed that Jackman’s Wolverine would be “probably a variant” as Patrick Stewart’s Professor Xavier in Doctor strange in the multiverse of madness.
We must admit that it sounds like it could be a viable possibility as Reynolds asks Jackman in the announcement video “do you want to play Wolverine One more time?”
While we’re at it, can we team up Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man and Jackman’s Wolverine, since the Marvel multiverse seems full of possibilities at this point?
Deadpool 3 hits theaters September 6, 2024.
