The first trailer for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning has just dropped, and it’s packed with interesting details. Each Mission: Impossible installment has pushed the boundaries of action sequences while still delivering an exciting story (which seems to connect seamlessly with each other).
This installment has been in the works since before the pandemic, leading to many delays, controversies, and reshoots. Only time will tell what Tom Cruise has in store for fans this time around, but from the looks of the trailer, it looks pretty exciting.
Hint towards a mysterious key
There are several still images in the trailer that show a key in the hands of the main characters. The key first appears around Ilsa’s neck while Ethan Hunt is checking it out.
The second time, Ethan holds the key in front of Hayley Atwell’s character. This key appears to be a requirement to enter any of the facilities. However, he could also be a McGuffin.
The return of the sandstorm
The Burj Khalifa sandstorm sequence in Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol has become iconic over the years, making it one of the best Mission: Impossible installments to date. The first images of the trailer indicate the return of the sandstorm; it’s not particularly clear what desert or location it might be.
This desert seems to play an important role in the story, as many scenes in the trailer take place in the desert. What’s interesting about this sequence is also that the horse chase goes right into this sandstorm.
Sequence inspired by Italian work
In the opening scenes of the trailer, there is a chase in the middle of a city, perhaps in France or Italy, and Tom Cruise appears to be driving a bright yellow car. This car chase is also one of the most iconic parts of almost every Mission: Impossible installment and it will be interesting to see how the studio makes this unique.
There’s also an indication that the car could have self-driving capability, which could add another element to the whole sequence. It could also make Dead Reckoning one of Tom Cruise’s best action movies to date.
kittridge is back
Mission: Impossible is known for bringing back the characters and linking the new movies with the old ones. Following this trend, we see in a clip that Kittridge is back (and not just for Part 1, he’s also scheduled to return for Part 2).
Kittridge returns after the first Mission: Impossible (which could create some interesting story twists for this one). However, it also looks like this installment will require a recap of every Mission: Impossible plot point.
tricky patch
In one of the scenes, Ilsa Faust (played by Rebecca Ferguson), who is also a returning character, is seen wearing an eyepatch. The trailer doesn’t give any hints as to how this could happen, leading some viewers to speculate that she might end up injured on one of her missions.
However, the footage also shows her holding a sniper rifle, which she is likely using to shoot the horsemen chasing after Ethan Hunt. The eyepatch could be there to improve her aim and focus. Let’s not forget that Ilsa is one of the bravest IMF agents around.
A new mysterious character
There wouldn’t be a Mission: Impossible without the introduction of some new villain or character. This time, it is someone who appears to be Kittridge’s ally and is seen giving him a mask.
It can be inferred that the mask is given to Kittridge just before this new character throws the grenades, which release green smoke. What the relationship between this new character and Kittridge could be is yet to be revealed.
Possible Wingsuit sequence
At the end of the trailer, Ethan Hunt can be seen jumping off a cliff from his bike and then free-falling. With Tom Cruise’s propensity to push the limits of his stunts, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume that he might give wingsuits a try.
More evidence can also be seen in the way he was spreading his arms out, which looked more like a wingsuit than a simple skydive. One thing to note is that the scene required some post work, but the movie is still over 1 year away so it shouldn’t be a problem.
possible flashbacks
There is a small box in the trailer that indicates a romantic scene between Tom Cruise’s characters and Rebecca Ferguson. The scene is shot in sepia tone and knowing the story behind the two characters, it can be assumed that it could be a flashback of either of the two characters. What is interesting is the reason for this flashback. With the presence of Hayley Atwell, a possible love triangle could be formed, which could be related to that.
Pom Klementieff can be a villain
When news broke that Pom Klementieff had been cast in the film, it was largely hidden until now whether she was going to be the lead or the villain. Some of the few snippets from the trailer give a good idea of what her character could be.
Looking at the action scenes and stylistic choices, it looks like Klementieff will be playing a villain (possibly one of Kittridge’s killers). It looks like Klementieff will be a major obstacle in Ethan Hunt’s mission.
