Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China
Let’s start our selection of video games that take place in China, with Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China. First installment of the trilogy of the Chronicles game series, this title was a new way to discover this saga signed Ubisoft. Released in 2015, the player embodies Shao Jun, the last member of the Asian assassins, only guided by the thirst for revenge that she will try to quench against the Templars. A rather good title which started a saga intended to offer different journeys to fans of the famous license of assassins, in particular with its two sequels Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: India and Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia. At JV, this title obtained the score of 14/20, highlighting its good replayability and its main character as a positive point.
Sifu
Released in early 2022 and a few months ago on Nintendo Switch, SIFU is an action-adventure game where kung fu takes center stage. Developed by a French studio named Sloclap, founded by former Ubisoft employees, Sifu is an excellent independent game that received a score of 16/20 from JV. Inspired by classic kung fu movies, its combat system is particularly effective. Steeped in Chinese culture and its myths, the artistic direction is remarkable and lets the player evolve in worked environments. Although this title is rather difficult, it serves as an immersion in learning a demanding martial art where self-control is essential.

Jade Empire
In 2005, the BioWare studio unveiled Jade Empire on Xbox. In a medieval China tinged with magic and dreamlike legends, the player can choose to embody one of the characters offered with different abilities. This RPG provides intuitive gameplay based on the different fighting styles learned during the adventure. The game is full of references to Chinese culture, especially in its environments, its dialogues and various quests. Multiple endings are available as are many allied characters. Jade Empire is a generous title that it would be a shame to forget.

Total War: Three Kingdoms
The tenth installment in the Total War series, not including Warhammer, Total War: Three Kingdoms is a turn-based strategy game set in China, inspired by the Three Kingdoms. A title that offers a historical reality, steeped in some myths and more epic elements. With the score of 16/20, this title won over fans of the series, but also neophytes of the genre. The improved diplomacy system and RPG-style general progression make Total War: Three Kingdoms a very good installment in the franchise.

Dynasty Warriors
With many different opuses and versions coming out regularly since 1997, Dynasty Warriors is probably one of the best known saga taking place in China. Hack & slash that popularized “muso” (games in which you have to face a large number of enemies simultaneously), this franchise immerses players in the intricacies of the War of the Three Kingdoms. With generally dynamic and addictive gameplay, it’s hard to miss this juggernaut in terms of video game references to ancient China.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty
Let’s finish our selection with a title that has not yet been released, but looks very promising: Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. Scheduled for March 3, 2023, this action-RPG game was developed by Team Ninja, the studio behind Nioh. In the heart of feudal China ravaged by war, the player embodies an anonymous soldier. With the editor, we had the chance to see the first levels of the adventure in an exclusive demo to the press… Only a few more weeks to wait for this title which seems worth the detour!
