One of the biggest and most exciting announcements from Sony’s September 2022 State Of Play was Rise of the Ronin for PS5, a new action RPG from Team Ninja, the makers of games like Nioh and Ninja Gaiden. Even though the game is scheduled to be released in 2024Rise of the Ronin already looks to be highly anticipated, so much so that Xbox gamers will be wondering if they’ll get a piece of the action.
The Rise Of The Ronin Xbox
Unfortunately, Rise of the Ronin doesn’t appear to be heading to Xbox Series X & S or Xbox One at all. During the State of Play presentation, Rise of the Ronin was announced as a PS5 console exclusive instead of a timed console exclusive, which would suggest that the game will never come to Microsoft’s platform.
On top of that, news has come in since the Rise of the Ronin reveal revealing that Sony has been collaborating with the development of the game. Sony has an in-house development team by the name of XDev, which has in the past been responsible for helping with the development of PlayStation games from outside studios. In the past, the Liverpool-based XDev team helped with the creation of games like LittleBigPlanet 1-3, Heavy Rain, Returnal, and more.
Traditionally, Sony Japan would handle the same responsibilities for games developed by third-party studios in Japan, but with the closure of Sony Japan, it appears that a team from XDev Japan is assisting Team Ninja in the development of Rise of the Ronin. XDev Senior Producer Jason Stewart tweeted that he is teaming up with Team Ninja regarding Rise of the Ronin, working in Japan to do so.
Privileged to work on an exciting title like #RiseOfTheRonin with Yasuda-san from @TeamNINJAStudio @giwamasa and ours @Sony_XDEV JP team. Only right to visit the Meiji Jingu Shrine. Of course, this isn’t a solid confirmation that Rise of the Ronin will never come to Xbox, because Sony has released games on Xbox in the past. One game specifically, in fact: MLB The Show. However, while we live in a world where Sony can publish and release games on Xbox, MLB: The Show is a licensed sports game, and reports suggest that MLB itself was an integral part of that decision.
Seeing a new IP like Rise of the Ronin porting over to Xbox is another story entirely. With Xbox expanding rapidly and aggressively in Japan recently, securing titles like Persona, Like A Dragon, and Danganronpa, seeing Rise of the Ronin on Xbox is definitely not impossible. Still, with Sony assisting Team Ninja in developing Rise of the Ronin, it will be a long time after 2024 before that’s even a possibility.
About Rise of the Ronin
Rise of the Ronin is a new single-player action RPG from Team Ninja, the minds behind Nioh and Ninja Gaiden.
Seven years in the making, Rise of the Ronin takes place in 18th-century Japan during the Edo Period, one of the country’s most infamous eras. With Japan under oppressive rule and ravaged by disease, you play as a ronin who is experiencing “the most critical revolution in Japanese history, including the darkest and ugliest chapters that many will avoid.”
Reminiscent of classics like Way of the Samurai, as well as Sony’s Ghost of Tsushima, Rise of the Ronin is scheduled to release in 2024 for PS5.
