Embracing her Wāhine Maori roots, Jen Cloher releases exciting single Human being.
Award-winning artist Jen Cloher releases her second single Human beingit’s off his next album I am the river, the river is mewhich will be released on Friday, March 3, 2023.
Human being it is an imposing hymn to truth and indigenous sovereignty. cloher shares “Of all the songs on this album that make me the most nervous, Being Human is the only one. It is serious, basic and crude. Reclaiming your culture is an awkward and complicated business. I can see why so many people avoid it.”
Human being it’s a track that doesn’t hold back, ramping up its intensity with urgent drum beats, a driving bassline, and angular guitar and synth that will leave you speechless. The track reaches a breaking moment before erupting into an exclamation of Haka chants from Naarm-based Kapa Haka, Te Hononga o ngā Iwi.
Accompanying the single is an energetic video clip featuring Te Hononga o ngā Iwi. The beautiful and vibrant images provide us with a kaleidoscope of colors, highlighting the importance of reclaiming your culture and connecting with yourself and your lost past.
Human being it’s just a taste of things to come from Jen Cloher. With I am the river, the river is me being her first album release in five years, this release is rich and green. It suggests that home is not a feeling you find in a place or politics, but in the community you maintain. Inspired by their powerful matrilineal Wāhine Māori ties, this album was not made in a frenzy, but was made from a place of care by someone who knows their past began before birth and will continue long after they are gone. The whole album is a celebration of the richness Jen feels within her community, and that’s pretty amazing.
