Joaquin Phoenix will earn $20 million to reprise his role as the Clown Prince of Crime in Joker 2, according to Variety. That’s a sizable pay raise from 2019 on the first film, for which Phoenix received $4.5 million.
The sequel has yet to start filming and very little is known about the plot of the film. In June, new details of Joker: Folie à deux surfaced, suggesting there’s a strong possibility that the film could be a musical starring Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn alongside Joaquin Phoenix returning as Joker. In June, Gaga was in “initial talks” to appear in Joker 2 and no deal has been reached. However, Warner Bros. and Gaga’s team are reportedly “deep” in negotiations. If the deal goes through, Gaga would play a new version of Quinn separate from Margot Robbie’s portrayal of the character.
Joker 2 will once again be written and directed by Todd Phillips, who also directed 2018’s A Star is Born, starring Gaga and Bradley Cooper (who also produced Joker). The report had no information on Joker 2’s new musical angle.
Phoenix won the Academy Award for Best Actor for portraying Arthur Fleck/Joker in Joker, while Hildur Guðnadóttir also won the Oscar for Best Music for the film. The film also garnered nominations for Best Picture and Best Director, among others.
As for the Joker character, he appeared in late 2022 in The Batman, played by Barry Keoghan. Keoghan’s Joker is expected to have a larger role in The Batman 2, and this version of the DC villain is expected to be separate from the one played by Phoenix.
