Jujutsu Kaisen, what is it?
Jujutsu Kaisen is an adaptation of the manga of the same name written by Gege Akutami (Kamishiro Sousa, No. 9) and broadcast since 2018 in the famous Shonen Jump. The manga has met with some success in Japan (the best-selling manga for the year 2021) and around the world. Unsurprisingly, an anime was quickly started by Mappa (Attack on Titan, Dororo…). From October 2020 to March 2021, the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen is broadcast (on Crunchyroll with us). A real gem of animation is offered to us, so much so that it will notably win the Anime of the Year award according to Crunchyroll. A movie, Jujutsu Kaisen 0was released in December 2021 to keep viewers waiting for season 2.
But what does it say? Jujutsu Kaisen plunges us into a world where all negative human emotions give rise to plagues. Only exorcists are able to see these evil forces and therefore have the mission of eliminating them, sometimes at the risk of their own lives. To help them, they can notably count on relics containing powerful plagues and capable of keeping others away. But when Yūji Itadori, an average high school student, swallows one of them, his life changes completely. He now shares his body with Ryōmen Sukuna, the most powerful scourge in the world. Then open to him the teachings of Satoru Gojo, the school of exorcism, the ability to save innocent people but also a tragic destiny. In effect, once he has swallowed all of Sukuna’s fingers, he will be sacrificed to annihilate once and for all this terrible scourge.
Where does season 1 end?
With its 24 episodes, the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen covered the Birth of the Matrix arcs, Initiation to the Occult, Little Fish and Return of the Stick, Tournament and Gregarious Instinct (i.e. 64 chapters). And the least we can say is that this last arc takes a more horrific turn and highlights the extraordinary abilities of our exorcists, in particular Nobara and Megumi. Add to that the fact that they are, along with Yūji, promoted to Class 1 Exorcist and we can already expect more dangerous missions in season 2.
Another important point: the plagues conjured up an evil plan regarding Satoru Gojo, who seems to be their prime target. Season 2 should therefore see this mysterious plan at work. As for Yuji, he is on his third finger of Sukuna ingested, but it becomes more and more difficult for the young man to contain the plague. If his quest to find all of Sukuna’s fingers will therefore continue in the coming seasons, we suspect that the latter will not be without difficulty.
Will season 2 have a connection with Jujutsu Kaisen 0?
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is certainly a prequel to the anime, but it still allows to introduce an important character who should appear during this season 2 or the one after: Yuta Okkotsu. In the film, adapted from the manga of the same name (2017), we indeed discover the journey of young Yuta, haunted by the curse of his childhood friend, Rika Orimoto. Thus, watching the film will provide a better understanding of who Yuta is when he is introduced, what his presence entails, and the connections he has with other characters.
What arcs will be told in season 2?
If we follow the manga, the second season should start with the Past of Satoru arc, which, as its name suggests, will return to the past of the most powerful of exorcists and his link with Suguru Geto. will then follow Shibuya Drama who will finally reveal to us the plan of the former exorcist. These two arcs comprising no less than 73 chapters (against 64 for the first season), it’s a safe bet that season 2 will stop there.
But we are not immune to seeing the following arc being adapted through this season 2 (or at least started) as well. Indeed, it is in this one that is supposed to arrive Yuta, presented in the film Jujutsu Kaisen 0. It would therefore be a shame to wait for season 3 to introduce it in the anime. Perhaps this new season will at least close with his entrance.
Who is in charge of this season 2?
Mappa is still in charge for Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2. In general terms, the team in charge of the project also remains the same. Park Sunghoo (The God of High School) is therefore directing, Hiroshi Seko (Attack on Titan – Lost Girls) to the screenplay and Tadashi Hiramatsu (Kill la Kill, Yuri!!! On Ice) to the animation, while Okehazama Alisa, Hiroaki Tsutsumi and Yoshimasa Terui will share the music. We should therefore find the same level of quality as in the first season.
When will Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 air?
If hallway noises announced season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen for the year 2022, it will finally have to wait until February 2023. No more precise date for the moment and only a first visual has been unveiled (which you can find below).
A priori, season 2 should follow the same model as the first. We will therefore find it on Crunchyroll with 24 episodes separated into two parts and spread over six months.
Where is the manga?
As of this writing, there are 197 chapters of Jujutsu Kaisen. The writing of the manga is still in progress, although Gege Akutami says he has already written down more than half of his story. He already knows where he wants to go and has sealed the fate of Yūji Itadori and Megumi Fushiguro. During an interview in 2021, he set himself 2023 as the end year for his manga. Unfortunately, he has since had various health problems delaying the writing of the latter. We can therefore imagine that the end of Jujustu Kaisen will arrive rather during the year 2024.
If all goes well, the anime should therefore last until at least 2025, in order to give the writers time to work on the last episodes. For Season 3, there’s a good chance it will extend into the Death Hunt arc which is still being written. The latter will therefore either straddle two seasons, or it will be necessary to wait for its conclusion before hoping for a season 3.
