Kingdom Hearts 4 is in “early development” and will take advantage of Unreal Engine 5.
Yesterday, April 10, Square Enix announced Kingdom Hearts 4, the latest in the long-running, action-packed series, with a flashy reveal trailer. Although an entirely new look and combat system was unveiled for the sequel, Square Enix has now confirmed that Kingdom Hearts 4 is in “early development,” via a press release.
This might surprise fans, as we saw Sora with a completely new look in the Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer, as well as new story beats and combat abilities. Considering this new information, though, it’s entirely possible that Kingdom Hearts 4 will look very different when it finally releases, and may not even feature the same combat system as the reveal trailer. In other words, don’t take the trailer to guarantee any end-game features.
What we can say for sure about the sequel is that it is being made with Unreal Engine 5. Famitsu Report (opens in a new tab) around the 20th anniversary celebrations of the Kingdom Hearts series confirms that Square Enix is switching to the fancy next-gen engine for Kingdom Hearts 4, so we can expect the new game to look much more advanced than Kingdom Hearts 3, for example. .
Elsewhere, some fans have apparently found Sora’s apartment, and it costs a staggering $1.2 million to purchase. The new reveal trailer showed Sora and company jogging through an urban landscape, with our leader backing away in a sleek skyscraper. Fans have been able to roughly deduce where this is in the real world of Tokyo, and it costs a whopping sum, so we’re really not sure how Sora is paying for the new digs.
