League of Legends MMO revealed early to combat leaks

The League of Legends MMO has been rumored since 2020 after Riot Games lead designer Greg Street proclaimed on Twitter that he was very pleased with his new job and that big things were coming to the League of Legends universe. When asked by a commenter if it was an MMO, the answer was simply “it’s an MMO”. It’s not hard to see how this led to some confusion in the community: One of the world’s biggest game developers announced arguably his biggest project ever via a reply to a tweet.

Since that day in 2020, no further information about the project has been released, until a fairly large thread was tweeted on August 1. It’s Greg again, clearing up some of the frustrations around the lack of information and why the project was announced so quietly.

“The ad was our CEO’s idea. We thought it made sense to do a low-key announcement to help with recruiting (we need a lot of MMO veterans), to get players excited, and because we thought it would probably leak anyway.

“Often in this business you worry about someone bailing you out,” he continues, “but that’s harder to do with an MMO. Everyone more or less knows how to make one. The challenge is actually doing it, and the massive cost and time it takes.

“The other big risk of announcing early is maintaining momentum. It’s hard to keep players engaged and excited for years. They might get impatient with the trickle of information or, worse yet, interpret the normal pace of development as something gone wrong.”

The disappointing announcement was to relieve some potential pressure on the team and to help with recruiting. I’m not sure there’s a way to lower expectations with one of the most feverish fan bases on the planet; this simply served to plant a small seed of what is to come. With more questions than answers, the community has been told to wait and see what they come up with.

“We want the ability to do massive pivots if the feedback isn’t what we expected to hear, even if it means delaying the game. It’s worth making sure the game exceeds your expectations, which are already pretty high, I might add.”

The idea of publishing zero information gives the production team almost infinite leeway if things don’t go their way. Games in the past have released trailers on day one, then when that game finally comes out things will inevitably be different. Fans and the media swoop down on those early game materials, pick them apart, and analyze everything – developers are almost always criticized for “missing content” (Cyberpunk 2077, we’re looking at you).

That’s all we have for now, with Greg basically telling us to ‘watch this space’. Personally, I look forward to everything Riot has in store for us in the future; For now, I’ll have to keep my enthusiasm contained on the Rift. the League of Legends Patch 12.15 Notes are here if you want to stay up to date with the changes Riot is making to your already released project. Couldn’t hurt to take a look either how much have you spent on league of legends Until now, you may need to save up for those inevitable MMO cosmetics.
