There are many ways to approach the MCU cinematic gig. For Taika Waititi, the real joy is not making films like Thor: love and thunder but trolling fans endlessly and not giving them what they should know they don’t want.
The director recently appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colberttalking about Chris Hemsworth’s thunderous buttocks in his next film and discussing his approach to directing a blockbuster film in a cinematic universe of such epic proportions as the one Marvel Studios is currently creating.
As he would, Taika also joked that trolling fans is one of the greatest joys he’s ever experienced in life, so vast in breadth and unmatched in depth that it puts him next to watching his children grow up.
“I like to listen to the fans and then troll them. Because it brings me a little joy in my life. I have many joys in my life, my children and the fans of trolling. when i did ragnarok, there were some people who didn’t know what I did and what I’ve done before and said ‘Oh, he’s going to screw it up!’ And then she was like, ‘Oh, I’m going to screw it up, okay! one hundred by one hundred!’ And then he’d say, ‘You don’t know what you want until I give it to you!’ And stuff like that.”
Fans should have realized by now that Taika does what Taika wishes. I don’t think even MCU boss Kevin Feige stands in the way of the director when his mind is set on doing something in the movies. As he explained in the same interview, love and thunder it’s been about pandering to your wildest ideas of what Thor should be.
“When you watch this movie, it’s like we asked a bunch of six-year-olds what they wanted in a movie and they said yes to everything.”
Thor: love and thunder will begin its theatrical run on July 8.
