Magic: The Gathering’s Double Masters 2022 Previews – Day Seven Highlights

We’re in the final stretch of Magic: The Gathering’s latest preview season, and Double Masters 2022 suddenly decided to throw a billion different combo pieces at us all at once. We knew this set was going to be a powerhouse, but if you’re a fan of running off with a trillions-long string of triggers, there’s plenty in today’s previews to entice you.

On day seven of the Double Masters 2022 Preview Season, we had one of the best Auras in the game, one of their best Mardu Commanders (red/white/black), one of their best Artifacts, and even a staple of cEDH that does not have. It hasn’t been printed in a booster pack since 1999. They’re much better for a single day of spoilers.

A Green Enchantment – Aura:

Enchant creature.

Enchanted creature gets +2/+0 and has trample.

When Rancor is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, return Rancor to its owner’s hand.

Rancor has long been considered one of the best Auras in the game. To many people, that doesn’t seem like much: +2/+0 and trample isn’t exactly the most complex and complex effect to impress a player with.

For one mana though, having a way to force damage through your opponent’s blockers is insane. Particularly in formats like Pauper and Modern, where the lower starting life total makes two extra damage hurt even more, it can be a game winner.

Even better is that Rancor is incredibly difficult to remove. If the creature it’s enchanting dies, Rancor returns to your hand to let you play it again. This opens up some combo potential in Commander, especially with One with the Kami and Phyrexian Altar.

All you need to do is enchant a creature with Rancor and sacrifice it to the Altar to produce at least two 1/1 Spirit tokens. The rancor returns to your hand, you have one green mana from the Phyrexian Altar, and you can repeat the process indefinitely for infinite enchantment casts and infinite creature tokens.

This wasn’t a card we desperately needed a reprint for, as it was last printed in the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Commander decks. That said, Rancor is always nice to see.

Kaalia of the Vast

One generic legendary creature, one red, one white, one black – Human Cleric – 2/2:

Whenever Kaalia of the Vast attacks an opponent, you may put an Angel, Demon, or Dragon creature card from your hand onto the battlefield tapped and attacking that opponent.

Given the sheer number of Commanders from Commander 2011 that Double Masters 2022 is receiving, it wasn’t too hard to predict that we’d see Kaalia of the Vast at some point. That said, of all of them, Kaalia is probably the one we needed the least. He is the only legendary creature in Double Masters 2022 so far that is also in the original Double Masters, and he received new, borderless art for the first time there.

Kaalia is one of the favorite flying tribal commanders in the game, thanks to giving you easy access to the three strongest types of flying creatures in the game: angels, demons, and dragons. We’ve also seen a lot of dragons in Battle For Baldur’s Gate, which could be a great way for players who arrived with that set to experience something spicier with Kaalia.

It also synergizes nicely with Aurelia, the War Leader, another confirmed commander for Double Masters 2022. While you won’t get the first attack trigger if Aurelia comes in attacking with Kaalia’s ability, having both attacks together allows you to unload even more creatures. From your hand. to the battlefield. Use Kamigawa’s Isshin, Two Heavens As One to double all of these attack triggers, and maybe a 2022 Kaalia deck will look a lot different than a 2020 one after all.

One generic creature, two white – Elemental – 3/1:

When Flickerwisp enters the battlefield, exile another target permanent. He returns that card to the battlefield under his owner’s control at the beginning of the next end step.

There was no way we didn’t have Flickerwisp in this set at the time it was announced that the white/blue/black eraser archetype focuses on flickering. Along with Restoration Angel (also confirmed for Double Masters 2022 today), it’s the flickering creature of choice.

Although Flickerwisp does the slower form of flickering that only returns things at the beginning of the next end step, it can flicker any type of permanent. Lands, artifacts, enchantments, and planeswalkers can be selected, opening up a host of new strategic plays. Even the very fact that it returns things during the next final step can be useful. Suppose you have an instant speed flicker source, such as Deadeye Navigator or Ephemerate. In that case, flashing the Flickerwisp on your end step could help you take out an opponent’s powerful card for an entire turn.

Incredibly, despite debuting at 2008’s Eventide and having been reprinted a dozen times, this is the first time Flickerwisp has received new art. It really stands out that despite being a white creature, it’s also a horrible flying moth elemental Facehugger thing. The art is amazing, but please never make us see the underside of a Flickerwisp ever again, Wizards.

Four generic artifacts:

If an artifact or creature that enters the battlefield causes a triggered ability of a permanent you control to trigger, that ability triggers once more.

It’s a Double Masters set with a blink-driven draft archetype, of course we were going to get an enters the battlefield (ETB) doubler like Panharmonicon. It’s one of the most iconic artifacts in Magic outside of Sol Ring and Black Lotus, and it’s also going to wreak a lot of havoc in Double Masters 2022.

Panharmonicon is a fierce combo piece, particularly in facilitating infinite blinks and ETB triggers. In Double Masters 2022 only, we already have Venser, Shaper Savant, which combines with Panharmonicon and Peregrine Drake to allow him infinite mana output, infinite storm count, and infinite ETB triggers. We also have Restoration Angel, which along with Felidar Guardian, is one of monowhite’s top infinite blink combos.

Panharmonicon fits nicely into not only any blink deck (which this set will greatly facilitate with Aminatou and Roon included), but any deck trying to drown its opponent under the effects of ETB. Considering we just got Streets of New Capenna and its alliance ability, a reprint of Panharmonicon at Double Masters 2022 is perfect timing.

grave crawler

A black creature – Zombie – 2/1:

Gravecrawler can’t block.

You can cast Gravecrawler from your graveyard whenever you control a Zombie.

Gravecrawler, the scourge of zombie decks and another major combo piece featured in Double Masters 2022, is an unassuming creature whose purpose ostensibly is to charge at the enemy over and over again.

That is, of course, until you realize that two cards also printing in Double Masters 2022 are Phyrexian Altar and Blood Artist. One of the early archetypes in the set is all about sacrificing creatures, so with these three cards and just one other zombie, you have a way to infinitely kill and bring back Gravecrawler to easily beat Blood Artist.

As well as being a hit for the draft environment, this is another example of how Double Masters 2022 is putting the finishing touches on many Commander products released last year. This reprint comes just a few months after Innistrad: Midnight Hunt’s Wilhelt the Rotcleaver became one of the format’s best zombie tribal commanders – add a Phyrexian altar and you have an infinite swarm of zombies for an otherwise pre-built. right. platform.

food chain

Two generics, one green enchantment:

Exile a creature you control: Add X mana of any color, where X is one plus the exiled creature’s mana value. Spend this mana only to cast creature spells.

While it did appear in The List, the Set booster exclusive, this is one of the biggest gaps between a debut and another booster reprint we’ve seen in Double Masters 2022. The last time we saw Food Chain was 19 years ago on Mercadian Masques, and in that time has become a star of the cEDH (Competitive Commander) format.

Despite seeming like a card for capsule decks at first, which aim to sacrifice gradually stronger creatures to play the heavyweights way ahead of your opponent, the trick with Food Chain decks is actually using lots of creatures you can cast from exile. , like Eternal Scourge and Squee, the Immortal.

Since Food Chain produces an extra mana, you can generate infinite mana with just one of these creatures. Eternal Scourge is the best card for this because it’s colorless, which allows you to produce any color with Food Chain and you always have enough to constantly play, ‘exile’ Food Chain, and recast your Commander from the command zone.

Any commander with green and a decent ETB effect plays well with Food Chain. For example, Omnath, Locus of the Roil deals damage equal to the number of elementals you control to any target when ETB. Even if you only have Omnath, ETB’s infinite food chain and that infinite mana give you an insanely quick win with minimal effort.

Priced at over $50, Food Chain was in desperate need of a reprint to help make these broken combos more accessible. As an added bonus, the new Daarken art features the return of a card many people fondly remember from Theros: Beyond Death, Ironscale Hydra.
