The DCEU might as well have ended as we know it. Shortly after the hammer fell on Bat girlWarner Bros announced that there will be a “reboot” of DC movies, with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO and President David Zaslav announcing that the focus would be shifting away from mid-range VOD movies and toward movies of ” highly successful events.
There have been cries of outrage from across the DC fandom. Snyder fans are dismayed that this sounds like the final nail in the #RestoretheSnyderVerse coffin, Henry Cavill fans are sadly coming to terms with the fact that he may never don a cape again, and those who were hoping Leslie Grace Bat girl could I get a last minute pardon? You have our sympathies.
But some fans are pulling out champagne corks. A thread on r/DC_Cinematic says that the complainers are “insane”, that Zaslav is amazing, and that we should all be excited about the new plan.
Many agree, saying that any sort of firm direction towards DC movies would be welcome after the chaos and mismanagement of the past few years. A key factor that allowed Marvel Studios to get ahead of Warner Bros is that they made a plan and stuck to it, even when weaker MCU entries like iron man 2 Y Thor: The Dark World rocked the boat a bit.
Other signs point out that we have heard all this before. The current DCEU has been through a lot of ‘plans’ and abandoned them at the first sign of trouble, be it the League of Justice debacle, abandoning plans to have a director-centric universe, and now abandoning virtually entire movies.
The proof, as always, will be in the pudding. If this is going to be the new plan for DC movies, let’s pray that they see it through instead of abandoning it midway.
