A true piece of gaming royalty joined the Arcade Archives this week, as Hamster introduced us to one of Bandai Namco’s most iconic and seminal releases from the golden age of gaming: dig dug, Now available to download on PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

Developed in 1981 and released to the burgeoning arcade market in 1982, dig dig is one of the most recognizable, memorable, and successful releases of gaming’s formative era. Players guide an intrepid miner through a series of single-screen underground caverns, digging tunnels and fighting the monsters that dwell within. In a mechanic that seems so blackly comical to modern eyes, our hero defeats his opposition by injecting them with a gas line and then inflating his pitiful bodies until they literally explode. eat your heart Mortal Kombat!

dig dig was a huge success for Namco, becoming the second best-selling arcade machine in 1982. It would go on to receive a host of source ports and several sequels, eventually serving as the inspiration for the equally cute and equally panic-inducing. mr driller Serie. It’s more, dig dig the villainous Pooka would become one of the publisher’s most recognizable mascot characters, and sits just below the pac-man Posse as one of Namco’s most beloved creations.

On a personal note, dig dig is possibly my favorite of the first arcade online. I love the character design, the sprites, and the use of color, and the music always makes me smile (a trick where the music stops when the main character stands still always tickles me). This day, dig dig It’s still a compelling (if simplistic) title, offering just as much of a challenge to modern gamers as it did to youngsters all those decades ago. It is fully deserving of its place in the annals of gaming history.
