We kick off our roundup of programs for Dragon Ball fans with a recent work that saw its popularity explode with the release of its anime adaptation. Demon Slayer is a manga written and drawn by Koyoharu Gotōge, and pre-published in Shūeisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump from February 2015 to May 2022. The story focuses on young Tanjiro Kamado who becomes a demon slayer following the massacre of his family by a of them. Only her younger sister survived, but was transformed into a demonic creature. Nevertheless, all hope is not lost. Indeed, Nezuko still shows signs of humanity which pushes our young hero to go in search of a cure. Only the first season (of the two broadcast) is available on Netflix.

Hunter x Hunter
We continue our discovery of cult shonen with a manga and animation classic. Hunter x Hunter (pronounced “Hunter Hunter”) is a masterpiece of Japanese comics scripted and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi and whose prepublication began in March 1998 in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump. With 36 volumes on the counter, the manga is still in progress. Hunter x Hunter was first adapted into an animated series in 1999, but it is the second adaptation that interests us today. First broadcast in 2011, the latter chronicles the adventures of young Gon Freecss determined to become a Hunter, an elite citizen, after learning that his father, a Hunter by profession, is still alive. The entire 2011 anime (148 episodes) is available on Netflix.
My Hero Academia
Superheroes have been in fashion since the advent of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in cinemas and then on Disney+. Alongside the overwhelming rise of the MCU, another superhero saga born in the Land of the Rising Sun has taken off. My Hero Academia is a manga created by Kōhei Horikoshi and pre-published in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump since July 2014. In a world where 80% of the population has powers called “alter”, the young Izuku Midoriya who dreams of becoming a superhero lacks it. Everything changes the day he meets All Might, the greatest superhero in activity, who bequeaths him the “One for All”. Only the first two seasons of My Hero Academia are available on Netflix. The work that follows is a must. In its time, it even democratized manga across the Atlantic to such an extent that the United States has since become the leading consumer country for Japanese comics… ahead of France. naruto is a manga written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto. Pre-published in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump between 1999 and 2014 for a total of 72 bound volumes, this shonen tells the adventures in a “ninja” world Naruto Uzumaki who aspires to become Hokage, title given to the leader of the remote village of Konoha. Unfortunately for him, a terrible entity was sealed within him at birth… Kyûbi, the nine-tailed demon. The entire saga is available on Netflix, from Naruto to Naruto Shippuden via the films and finally its direct sequel Boruto: Naruto Next Generations.

Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas
Manga capable of competing with the Dragon Ball master are rare. However, the frankness which will follow made a time equal with that of Akira Toriyama. Saint Seiya (or The Knights of the Zodiac in France) is a manga by Masami Kurumada prepublished between 1986 and 1990 in Weekly Shōnen Jump. The franchise has seen several spin-offs over the decades, including the one that interests us today. Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas takes place in the 18th century in an alternate universe, and focuses on the character of Tenma, an orphan destined to become one of the 88 protective warriors of the goddess Athena. Yū Yū Hakusho
We end with a series that has left its mark on an entire generation of readers, and still remains in 2022 a major work of the 7th Japanese Art. manga Yū Yū Hakusho by Yoshihiro Togashi appeared for the first time in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1990 to end 19 volumes later in 1994. Success obliges, an animated adaptation was born in October 1992, and was ended two years later after 112 episodes. Yū Yū Hakusho dwells on the life of Yusuke Urameshi, a kind-hearted fourteen-year-old delinquent, who dies saving a child. Faced with the unexpected death of the young rebel, the high authorities of the kingdom of the dead offer him to come back to life on one condition… to prove that he is worthy.
