Jennifer Hale, who is voicing Bayonetta in Bayonetta 3 after original voice actress Hellena Taylor was unable to come to terms with Platinum Games, has released a statement regarding the situation. Hale is one of the most prolific and experienced voice actresses working in video games today, known for her portrayals of herself as Commander Shepard in Mass Effect, among many other roles.
Hale said in a statement: “As a longtime member of the voice acting community, I support the right of all actors to be well paid and have consistently advocated for this for years.”
She added: “Anyone who knows me, or has followed my career, will know that I have great respect for my peers and am an advocate for all members of the community.”
Hale went on to say that he signed a confidentiality agreement that prevents him from being able to discuss the details of the situation. That said, Hale said, “My reputation speaks for itself.”
The voice actor went on to say, “I sincerely ask that everyone keep in mind that this game has been created by an entire team of hardworking and dedicated people and I hope that everyone will keep an open mind about what they have created.” Hale ended his note by saying : “I hope that everyone involved can resolve their differences in a friendly and respectful manner.”
Taylor posted several videos on Twitter this weekend in which he claimed he was offered $4,000 to play Bayonetta again in Game 3, an offer he found “insulting.” He has urged people to boycott the game and donate the money they would have spent on the game to charity.
Taylor also hinted that she is breaking her confidentiality agreement with this statement, but said that it doesn’t bother her. “I can’t even afford to drive a car. What are they going to do, take my clothes off? Good luck to them. Bayonetta always stands up for those with less power and stands up for what’s right, and by doing this, you’re with her,” Taylor said.
Taylor said that she wishes Hale well with Bayonetta 3, but said, “She has no right to say she’s Bayonetta.”
Taylor ended her speech by saying citing jesus christ, whom he described as “the greatest moral teacher who ever lived”. He quoted the parable of Lazarus and the rich man, which warns against the evils of wealth.
Bayonetta 3 launches on October 28 as a Nintendo Switch exclusive.
