Nintendo fans are still very skeptical about the next Super Mario Bros. animated film. Let’s face it, they are right to have their doubts: the last Mario The film has gone down in cinematic history as a strange disaster, Chris Pratt voicing Mario still feels like a very strange choice, and there are lingering questions about whether plot-light video games should be made into a movie.
So far, all we’ve seen of the film is a cast poster, but on October 4, Nintendo and Illumination will unveil the first trailer at New York Comic-Con. The stakes are high in this reveal, Pratt took to Twitter to ensure it will be “very special”, and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has been a regular at Nintendo Directs to promote it.
But many Mario fans still think disaster is on the horizon for the Mushroom Kingdom:
Some can’t believe this is actually happening:
Is this the Mario we can expect?
The scene is apocalyptic:
Even some fans of the 1993 film have come out of nowhere:
But this may end with the same viral hype as Minions: The Rise of Gru:
This seems to sum up what’s going on best:
Right now we’re preparing for the moment when Chris Pratt’s voice first comes out of Mario’s mouth, which is going to be a jarring moment no matter how we prepare for it. Perhaps we can take comfort in the fact that Nintendo insists it won’t repeat the mistakes of the past, Miyamoto’s involvement from the start, and that Nintendo’s plans for a Mario movie universe hinge on this first movie being a success.
Fingers crossed until October 6th.
