Olivia Wilde answers questions about splitgate, Shia LeBeouf and Florence Pugh

appearing in The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday night, Olivia Wilde answered the host’s questions that we all wanted to ask.

Promoting his next movie that you may have heard a hundred times already, in case you managed not to, it’s called Do not worry honeyWilde’s film has received enormous attention for many reasons, including alleged feuds and controversies, and the fact that it stars current music heartthrob Harry Styles, who also began a relationship with Wilde during filming.

Wilde not only directed and produced the film, but also stars in it. However, the main star of the film is Florence Pugh, who was rumored to have had issues with Wilde. When Colbert asked Wilde about it, she simply said, “I only have respect for Florence Pugh. I have nothing against her for any reason.”

Colbert then asked whether or not Harry Styles spit on Chris Pine, referring to a moment now known as “spitgate” in which Harry Styles appeared to spit on Pines at the film’s premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Wilde commented: “In fact, Harry didn’t spit on Chris. He really didn’t. People can watch a video that shows evidence of someone NOT spitting on another person and still see what they want to see.”

Wilde also discussed the controversy surrounding Shia LeBeouf who, after Wilde said he had fired him, posted a video of Wilde trying to talk him out of resigning. About the video, Wilde explained. “There were private messages posted without context to try to make a situation look like something it wasn’t.”

This prompted Colbert to ask directly, “Did you fire Shia LeBeouf?”

Wilde replied:

“We had to replace Shia. He’s a fantastic actor, but he wasn’t going to work. When he gave me his or Florence’s ultimatum, I chose Florence and it was him feeling like she was walking away and me feeling like we were moving on without him.”

The director also took the opportunity to point out the tremendous effort involved by everyone who worked on the film and explained that, due to the pandemic, it took three years to make it. He added: “It was a great team effort and there were a lot of us who came together and moved forward… we’re very proud of it.”

Regarding the ongoing discussions and controversies surrounding the film which Wilde referred to as a “Twitter storm”, he noted the irony of it all when he mentioned, “The film is about the narratives we receive and whether we choose to accept them. “
