Overwatch 2 Junker Queen’s Abilities Match “Brutal Personality”

“The Junkertown map showcases her tough, almost brutal personality, and we wanted her abilities and playstyle to match that energy,” Blizzard says of the abilities of Junker Queen, its new Overwatch 2 hero. to the FPS game roster in time for Overwatch 2’s second public beta, and a quick look at his team reveals that he’s adopting a few tricks usually associated with the support role.

Now, a blog from Blizzard developers delves into the design decisions that went into creating their brawl-oriented gear. The developer says that Junker Queen’s pre-existing role in Overwatch lore meant that she “had high expectations from the community on her majestic shoulders.” As such, they leaned into her style as a feisty and dangerous fighter: “a berserker tank whose survivability is directly related to the number of enemies she’s hurting.”

This is reflected in her passive ability, Adrenaline Rush, which causes Junker Queen to heal from all damage from wounds. Wounds can be caused by her melee Jagged Blade, which is applied both on her fast melee attack or when she uses an active ability to throw the knife at an opponent, as well as with her Carnage ability and Rampage ultimate. Wounds cause the enemy’s health to slowly deplete, fueling Junker Queen’s lifesteal.

His axe, known as Carnage, was “the starting point for his design,” says Blizzard: it’s one of the defining characteristics of how the character has previously been portrayed in the Overwatch narrative. However, the team decided against making her a melee hero, restricting Carnage’s use to her abilities. “Historically, creating a melee hero in Overwatch has come with its own set of challenges.” The team cites Genji’s Dragonblade, which was initially her primary weapon before becoming an ult in the final release because it “didn’t translate well into the game.” Instead of giving Junker Queen a similar ult, they decided to make it a cooldown-based ability.

Originally, the ax was going to be thrown, but it resulted in an overly rigid playstyle. Instead, the team allowed Junker Queen to launch her melee weapon, a knife named Gracie, as her secondary fire. Landing on an enemy wounds them, then remembering it pulls the opponent towards Junker Queen. “When Reinhardt was first prototyped,” Blizzard explains, he “was able to throw his hammer, an ability that was great in theory, but awkward in practice.” This was because Reinhardt had to go and pick up the hammer from him manually, while Junker Queen has a magnetic gauntlet that he uses to bring his weapons closer together.

As mentioned above, the wound effect on Gracie also applies to her fast melee ability whenever Junker Queen is holding her knife, and also applies the lifesteal passive. This additional effect stems from the implementation of a melee kick for Zenyatta, suggesting that the team is more willing to experiment with unique melee tricks for the game’s sequel.

Commanding Shout, Junker Queen’s final normal ability, temporarily increases her own health by 200 and that of nearby allies by 100, allowing everyone to briefly survive, perfect for jumping into the fray head-on. Crucially, it also applies a 30% movement speed buff in the same AoE – the first team movement speed buff in the game since Lucio. The team says this was designed to reflect her aggressive and confrontational nature: “She plows through her opposition with relentless aggression that demands space.”

Similarly, Junker Queen’s ultimate ability, called Rampage, also takes her right into battle. Spinning Carnage and Gracie around her magnetic gauntlet, Junker Queen charges forward in a straight line, applying a wound to anyone in the way and preventing them from healing for a short period. Once again, Junker Queen dives into the support skill pool, becoming the second hero with a healing prevention skill after Ana’s Biotic Grenade.

Blizzard explains Rampage’s design by saying, “We didn’t want it to feel fancy or magically influenced, because it didn’t align well conceptually with [her] character. She is a display of the raw, visceral power that she possesses as Queen.” The ability to hurt multiple enemies, thus providing passive healing to Junker Queen while also blocking the enemy from doing the same, certainly reads as particularly potent.

As Blizzard noted, the Junker Queen is the first tank to be built with Overwatch 2’s new 5v5 team composition in mind. “Tanks play more aggressively in Overwatch 2, and the Junker Queen is certainly no exception; in fact, would be considered the rule.”
