Game News Overwatch 2: What will happen to your lootboxes and virtual money?
Blizzard clarifies the situation of Overwatch 2, in particular with regard to the lootboxes and the virtual currency of the first opus.
Blizzard hopes keep as many Overwatch players as possible in its new title Overwatch 2. This notably involves the transfer of lootboxes and virtual currency.
Overwatch players won’t lose anything on Overwatch 2
It’s certain a Reddit thread “Ask me anything” dedicated to Overwatch 2 that Jon Spector, Commercial Leader and Vice President of Overwatchanswered a question about lootboxes and virtual currency :
Q: What will happen to current lootboxes and currencies (Credits, OWL Tokens, Competitive Points) once Overwatch 2 is live? Will they just disappear?
Jon Spector: Thank you for your question!
We’ll share a more detailed explanation on all of these topics before Overwatch 2 goes live in October. To give you a quick answer now, these existing currencies (Credits, OWL Tokens, and Competitive Points) will come with you in Overwatch 2. We will not be extending lootboxes in Overwatch 2, and prior to launch, all lootboxes (from Overwatch 1, editor’s note) unopened will be opened automatically and your account will receive all the content directly.
EDIT: I also clarified below that OW1 Credits will come with you in OW2, but our new Virtual Currency will be the primary currency, and there will be things in OW2 that cannot be purchased with those OW1 Credits.
No lootboxes, but a battle pass
The Overwatch credits and Overwatch 2 will therefore be quite distinctand will allow different items to be purchased, but players will at least be happy to hear that they won’t won’t lose what belonged to them on the first opus. Above all, we note that lootboxes simply won’t exist in Overwatch 2but any you own in Overwatch will not be lost, but open automatically. Remember that Overwatch 2 will be a free-to-play, thus offering a different model of his predecessor. No more lootboxes then, of course, but a battle pass.
Overwatch 2 is due to officially release on October 4 on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
