Your Overwatch currency and loot box contents will automatically transfer to your Overwatch 2 account when the sequel launches, Blizzard has confirmed.
In a new Reddit AMA, Overwatch Business Lead Jon Spector took the time to clarify a few points about what will happen to coins and loot boxes earned in Overwatch when Overwatch 2 comes out. Fortunately, we have some good news on both. fronts, as Spector assured fans that nothing will be taken from them when their account is merged.
“We will share a more detailed explanation on all of these topics before Overwatch 2 launches in October,” Spector wrote. “However, to give you a quick answer now, those existing currencies (Credits, OWL Tokens, and Competitive Points) will be coming with you in Overwatch 2.”
However, since loot boxes won’t be a thing in Overwatch 2, any unopened loot boxes you currently have saved will be automatically opened before launch and their contents will be added to your account.
“We are not carrying over loot boxes to Overwatch 2, and prior to launch, any unopened loot boxes will automatically open and your account will receive all content directly.”
ICYMI, Blizzard recently announced that Overwatch 2 will launch in October as a free-to-play game. And like most F2P games, it will be supported by a new battle pass system that will replace loot boxes, which offered random rewards that players could buy for real money or earn by playing.
In a recent roundtable interview with GamesRadar+ and other media outlets, Blizzard said we’ll have to wait a bit longer for answers to several key questions about the battle pass, like what separates the premium pass from the free version and whether everyone cosmetics will be available outside of the battle pass.
“That’s something we’ll go into detail with before October 4, but we’re not ready to do that right now and we want to make sure it’s not just, ‘Hey, let’s answer this little piece of the puzzle now,’ but more of a more complete, ‘Here’s everything you need to know about the new battle pass system as a whole'”.
