Persona developer Atlus is in the process of suing a fan who unofficially resurrected the MMO Shin Megami Tensei through the use of private servers.
as seen @MarshSMT (opens in a new tab) on Twitter, Atlus is suing for copyright infringement after a fan (doing business as Rekuiemu Games) hosted their own servers on the MMORPG Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine, which was shut down in 2016. As detailed in the court documents (opens in a new tab): “In flagrant violation of US copyright law, the Defendants, by their own admission and without any authorization, have decided to ‘resurrect’ the Imagine Game”, which is believed to have begun around August – December of 2020.
Damn, wait, this wasn’t a joke at all. Atlus is really suing the Imagine fan server pic.twitter.com/UBeoobSlTFSeptember 26, 2022
The document continues: “They have done so by creating and operating an exact copy of the original website used by Atlus to distribute the Imagine Game”, “by creating and distributing an exact or near-exact copy of the Imagine Game that users can download from the offending website ” and “create and distribute an unauthorized web server [..] which emulates the original game server used by Atlus and which allows users to publicly display and play the offending game online with other players.”
According to the documents, the lawsuit was originally filed in December 2021, but was regularly updated until today, September 26, 2022. If the lawsuit is successful, Atlus requests that the website be closed and the player run. the server to pay up to $25,000 per violation in damages, as revealed in court documents. This is because the defendants’ actions allegedly caused – “and will continue to cause” – “irreparable harm to Atlus unless restrained by this court.”
If you didn’t know, Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine originally released in 2007 and saw players wander through a post-apocalyptic Tokyo as they took control of a ‘Demon Buster’ while exploring different locations, taking on quests, upgrading items and weapons. , and all the other things you can normally do in an MMORPG.
