A petition to get Amber Heard out of aquaman and the lost kingdom continues her meteoric momentum by surpassing four million signatures, even as the ongoing libel trial she’s involved in with ex-husband Johnny Depp is set to resume next week after a break.

In fact, the petition on Change.org makes direct reference to the trial, indicating that everything that has unfolded in the highly publicized courtroom drama has likely contributed to more people getting behind it.

Depp is suing Heard for $50 million for defamation, alleging that she allegedly made false accusations of domestic abuse against him that damaged his career. Heard countersued Depp, also for defamation, for $100 million.

Although Heard maintains that Depp abused her, the pirates of the Caribbean The actor claims the opposite: he was abused by her and not the other way around. The sponsors of the petition have evidently sided with Depp, as can be seen from the description of the petition.

“Amber Heard has been exposed as a domestic abuser by Johnny Depp,” the petition reads. “In his $50 million lawsuit, Johnny Depp describes many incidents of domestic abuse he suffered at the hands of his (then) wife Amber Heard.”

Depp has alleged that these incidents at the hands of Heard included two punches to the face and a bottle of vodka being thrown at his hand, which ended up cutting off his finger. On the other hand, Heard claimed that Depp’s self-destructive pattern with drug and alcohol abuse apparently led him to cut off his own finger. In addition, she claimed that Depp often slapped and hit her, and sexually assaulted her twice.

The speed at which the petition has been gaining traction is staggering, as it has gained a million new signatures since last week. At the time, the petition also saw an increase of one million signatures from the previous week, when it topped the two million mark at the end of last month. All of this comes amid a trial that has been publicly broadcast from a courtroom in Fairfax, Virginia, since mid-April.

Even though the court of public opinion clearly favors Depp, it’s hard to really determine whether Heard was actually misleading in her domestic abuse claims, as much of that determination has hinged on one person’s word against another. However, a highly publicized audiotape, in which Heard appeared to admit that she hit Depp and started physical fights, has been much-cited evidence for Depp’s defenders since it was leaked to the press in 2020.

Depp’s lawsuit against Heard centers on an op-ed she wrote for the Washington Post in 2018, in which she describes herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” Although Depp is not mentioned in the article, Heard made previous allegations of abuse against Depp in 2016, which she claims she is referenced in the article.

The trial is expected to resume on Monday, where Heard will continue her testimony under direct examination.
